Wanted to get some opinions on in-season reel maintenance from some of you guys...
I back off the drags when I put the rods away for the winter - im at least 90% sure I did this past winter- but I do keep the drags locked down throughout the season and was wondering if I should be back off them when not using them?
I ask because a few times this season I have had the drags on my curado and 401d slip on some hook sets and while I know they are weak drags to begin with I felt maybe they slipped a bit too easily and I was wondering if this might be a result of them being locked down too much and the drags are weaker now?

i also back mine off after i'm done fishin for the day everytime out. i had carbontex drag washers installed this past winter and they make a BIG difference. well worth the small expense.

Aftermarket drag washers make a huge difference in the kinetic friction of the drag. Even when it slips it doesn't keep slipping and take all of the backbone out if your hookset.

+1 on the carbontex Drag. Have them in all my reels. A very light coating of Cal's drag grease and you don't even have to worry about slipping if it gets wet; go ahead and figure 8 with your reel in the water.

Loosen every night coming off water. Replace with carbontex. Clean annually....bout the easiest maintenance there is and a light coat of teflon based grease.
Cal's and Shimano market a drag specific grease but I've found the more readily available teflon greases available at your local bicycle shop work just as well.
Finish Line offers a premium high temp teflon grease.

While this doesn't answer your question... if you palm the reel try to get into the habit of putting your thumb on the spool when you set the hook. It takes very little pressure to stop the spool and if you use this method you can always have your drag set for fighting fish. It's very easy to have some of the new reels too tight when they have a max drag of 20 pounds or more.

Replace with Carbontex Drag Washers, they will not slip !!!!!!
If you R fishing for say 2-3 days U dont have to back off drags off every day but when U get home then ALWAYS BACK THEM OFF.

Thanks Richard. I was wondering about this too since I just had mine tuned up and I care a lot about preventative maint. Got good stuff so I like to take care of it.

I back mine off at the end of the day (night) and also check periodically throughout the outing.
The spring washers used in alot of reals is another weak point.
It would be nice if they were available in a tempered high performance grade spring steel.
Carbonex will make a World of difference! You'll never look back after using them.
They sell precision ground metal plates too, if your really into high performance.
One of the things I like about carbonex is the broad range of adjustment you can get.
theres alot of room between locked down and loose.

Probably pointing out the obvious here but if you are using superbraid and don't have it taped to the spool or don't have a mono backer on, then the line will slip on the spool. Seen a lot of people who thought they had drag problems and it was actually the superbraid turning on the spool.
