Does anyone happen to know if Shimano makes a left hand retrieve model for the Calcutta 400? I haven't seen any around but I was hopeful that I was wrong - My left hand is incapable of anything but turning a handle ...

Thanks,

Mike

It's not made, Mike.  If it were, Shimano would increase sales by 10-15% on that model, but you'll have to make do with a TE (ouch $).  You could try the Catala 401 but there have been mixed reviews on it.  I had one and it lasted 1 day.

I don't know of any good mid-range thumb bar models.  Abu makes 6.3:1 or low gear (Winch) models but nothing with a thumb bar for lefties that I know of in a 5:1 ratio.  A Daiwa Millionaire is your best bet at around $200 but it's smaller in size than some like.  I ended up with a couple of Abus from Cabela's 6601 and 5601 that are high speed, then bit the bullet and got a 401TE.

Sputterbug - how much did your 401TE run ($)? (doubtful I could manage it, but out of curiosity ... or wishful thinking)

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, they're ridiculously expensive.  $349 at Rollie and Helen's.  I got them to spool some Tuff Line for free (well, it's the least they could do <g>).  I'd try Matt Thompson at Thorne Bros.  They give good trade show discounts and perhaps they could work something out with you.  My brother got one for $309.
