I'm heading up to Lake Vermilion for the first time the last days of June, first days of July. Wondering if anyone had any patterns or tricks to share? Any suggestions on west or east side? I've got lodging available for either. Anything's appreciated.
Thanks,
Elwood

Look up Doug Knoer, he is an awesome guide up there, knows the lake in and out. He'll put you on fish.

Woody,

You'll love it up there. We stay at Muskego Point in Wakemup Narrows on the west end. It will be my 5th year there.I'm not a seasoned muskyphile but I've seen some real hawgs on that water. Hope to spend more time each year focusing on them. Also be aware that Ace, David, and Cliff are respected and seasoned guides as well as Doug. So you should be able to get as much or little  help as you desire. Fishing MN.com has some good helps on Big V as well as this site. Keep us posted and good luck!

Hey Woody,
The Big V is a dream come true for muskie anglers. We have every kind of structure you can imagine and it's full of Big Muskies!

The west end has more cabbage, but the east end has much better deep main lake rock structure and more islands.

Late June is bucktail time for the
best numbers but the topwater bite
is warming up and jerkbaits can be
effective especialy over rocks.

Weed edges, reed beds, points that are adjacent to shallow weedy bays
and inshore saddle areas really shine early in the summer.

Bucktail colors from brite to the naturals can be effective so try them all. Some of my favorites are Black/silver Black/orange, Copper/ red, black/chart, white/silver.

There are more fishy looking spots than you can beleive and it would
take a liftime to try them all.
Make sure that you figure 8, the dark water makes it tough to see all the follows and they will come out of nowhere, more times than not.

Sponge,

Thanks for the kind words. I was in Mt Pleasant, TX on business and did not bring my laptop or I would have posted sooner.

My place in the back of Greenwood Bay. I had the best luck last year on small bucktails. White with Nickel blades and Yellow with Gold blades were good producers for muskies last July/August. White spinnerbaits and Chartueuse spinnerbaits also produced Muskies and Pike. Fished a lot of topwater. Mainly Jackpots and tail baits like the TopRaider and Super Top Raider. Had some issues with the Super last year but I believe it was mostly operator error. Creepers and Hawg Wobblers are great after dark.

Most of my time was spend in Frazer Bay, the Narrows, Daisy Bay, the Cans near Pine Island and the backside of Pine Island. Guideman is right everything looks fishy. I hope to do some more exploring this year. I am heading up with my wife July 4th weekend. Can't wait to get on the water!

Thanks,

Jack Latrobe

Glad to see you back in the saddle Jack Bull! Ground control to Major Tom: could there possibly be a rational explanation as to why there are no fish by your dock???:O

Nothing rationail Sponge my bud.
But the shear volume of the vibe and the magic of the Z'z brings them only to me!

Why waste ones time?

Plus then there is always the Legend of Mallard Island to deal with and the Three Mallard Island Maraders and the one that can turn into a Bear-Dog at will and keep your boat at bay for days on end!

No fish by my dock alright, but more than the average man can handle!

But it's all good my frined, its all good.

PLease stop by and give it a try!
