Location: Ashland WI | I was out fishing on a northern WI lake this weekend.
When I got to the boat landing, there was a very strong smell of fish. I went down to the dock, and noticed a lot (25 or so) dead panfish. The wind was moving directly toward the landing. When we started out into the lake, I noticed quite a few more dead fish floating.
Any ideas what was happening here? |

Location: Loves Park, IL | My guess is there is a lake association that is poisoning the weeds. There have a been a few lakes in the past that have an association that does this to kill the weeds in front of their cabins for better sandy swimming areas. The lake we investigated was Deer Lake in Polk County, WI. The spray pretty much stopped the musky fishing as there were no fish moving during this event. Just a guess but it sounds very familiar. |

Location: Savage, MN | I was out on Prior Lake (Twin Cities South Metro) last week and noticed quite a few floating panfish as well and was wondering the same thing. Most of them that we saw were in 5' or less and heavily weeded areas, ones that I don't believe are treated by homeowners/lake assoications. Would also be interested in knowing if anybody else knows anything about it.

Location: Wisconsin | It very well may be columnar is, I am no expert on that at all haha. But I would agree that lake associations killing weeds can be a factor, especially if the lake has a ton of rec pressure, they will spray the #*#* out of those lakes |

Location: MN | Same folks that spray for lake weeds fertilize their grass then wonder why they have so many weeds.

Similar situation out by me. The DNR came out to take samples, they also said columnaris. |

It might have been your lake. It was in Sawyer co. |
