| What's up guys, I am gearing up for my second season of musky fishing.
I plan on being on the water by 4. Plans could change due to weather but so far the plan is to throw topwater shallow on shorelines until about 6-630 and then start working a spinnerbait over emerged vegetation.
What seems to put fish in the boat for you guys early in the year?

Location: Bloomington, MN | Welcome Ty, and since this is your first post I have some suggestions.
#1 State where you are fishing, Metro is a good general description as is Central Minnesota or Northern Minesota. If you are down in the southern part, the answer to your question will vary. I don't think Central to southern matters much this year.
#2 Don't put yourself on a regimented time schedule. That is what work is for. Please remember fishing should be fun/relaxing. You sound very far from being relaxed.
#3 The folks on here are helpful, but the ones that make their living/side income/catch big fish and don't want additional pressure on the water they fish, probably will not respond. Don't expect them to hand out their information. The Big White Chicken taking you under their wing days on the internet are long over.
My suggestion is to give it until at least 8:15 AM, if not all day with a chartruese/yellow jackpot. Best of luck, and let us know how you did.

Location: Chisholm, MN | Being on the water at 4am is a great idea! That way you hit spots before anyone else, and contrary to what some say, muskies will bite at night and very early in the morning depending on conditions in the early season. I too, will be first on the water. Your plan sounds good so far. I would throw some gliders like a phantom or a hellhound, also topwater like a jackpot is killer. For bucktails, I throw small stuff like Bigtooth mini 8's, and work my way up from there. Vary your speeds. Sometimes a burned bucktail is what works early, and sometimes it's slow gliders that will work. Opener is a great time to get a lot of follows and learn new spots because people haven't been harassing the fish constantly yet. Honestly, the best way to be better than everyone else and make everyone cry about all the big fish you caught is to work way harder than them. VERY early mornings, late nights and long hours of diligent casting will have the online community super jealous! Good luck! |

Location: Alex or Alek? | I'll be joining you at 4am!! We where the first boat out on WI lake this last weekend and it paid off when my buddy caught a nice 38". That was on a dawg. We threw a lot of gliders, topwaters, bucktails, dawgs, and jerkbaits but that was the only fish that wanted to play. |

| lol.. only reason to go out at 4am is if there will be a ton of pleasure boaters out later.. otherwise get your sleep so your not too miserable right away. |

Location: St Paul, Minnesota | I'll be up on Miltona, starting Friday before opener we'll be tossing Bass and Crappie gear to map weed growth, forage fish, lake temps, and spots of interest. Opening day Saturday sunrise is around 5:30am with Majors from 7:20am-9:20am + 7:45pm- 9:45pm, and a minor from 1:20pm-2:20pm. We'll be out fishing probably right around sunrise and until sunset with breaks in between, but we'll for sure be on our located confidence spots during the peak solunar times.
Last weekend in Wisconsin off weedflats away from shore (6-8ft) it was the Vexar, Hellhound, and 9inch suicks that moved the most fish with one fish following hard at the evening major on a small double bladed venom bucktail; so those will likely be heavily thrown this weekend.

It's just stupid busy on Lakes like tonka on opener. 9 boats waiting to fish the same spot that a different 9 boats didn't even see a fish on... eff that |

| Opening day follows the same pattern for us three in the boat for years barring a cold front,,,we will see have follows from 35-45 fish catch 2 or 3,,and the next day on Sunday same lake,same weather conditions, see somewhere in the 15 -20 follows and maybe 1 fish. Just about every year we see the most fish on opening day and then it gets scarce by July we avg about 3 follows on the same water,,,,they smarten up that fast.

Location: varies | Aahhh yes, that glorious time of year in Minnesota. When you wait at the launch cursing under your breath at the slow poke ahead of you who just can't seem to back up, taking multiple stabs at it. You get your turn and find your doing the same thing as if it's all new to you.
get on the water, take a deep breath of that 2 stroke, get a face full of that reel mist, take a number like at the Walmart return counter to get your run at a stretch of the promised land. all the while the sounds of nature are being drowned out by the clanking blades of cowgirls from all directions. I for one can't wait!  |

Location: Walker, MN | The forecast so far looks good, warm at night even. I have no reason to sleep in, there are other factors that will get me out there early as well..
I think (hope) this is going to be a productive year with early ice out and decent temps to kick things in gear. I have already seen two very aggressive fish that were intent on stealing our Walleyes in the past two weeks.
As far as lures, with water in the mid 60's, almost nothing is off of the table for me. |

Location: Maple Grove, MN | I will most likely be on Minnetonka a half hour before sunup Saturday morning. I disagree with what some have said about Minnetonka being to busy to fish. Yeah, it gets busy on the community spots (i.e Ferguson, Brackets, etc), but there are spots on every bay and finding a good place to fish is not hard. To keep it simple, just look for any wind-blown shore line near deep water. Start on the outside weed edge and then try the inside weed edge. If there is shallow cabbage in the area, work it right up to shore. You don't need big or fancy lures either. Smaller sized spinner baits like Candy Spins, Grinders, Rad Dogs or CJs work just fine. Double-8 bucktails, 6-8 inch twitch baits and 6-8 inch plastics will all draw attention too. Mostly you need a lure that you can get through the tops of the weeds. You're not going to catch much if you spend all day taking weeds off your lures.
That said, the smaller metro lakes line Indy, WB, Forest, Waconia, etc might be easier to fish and probably give a person just as good or better a chance at catching a Muskie. I fish Minnetonka for the big fish, but for numbers I go elsewhere. On second thought, I might not even go there Saturday.

My oldest grandson will be joining me and we always do well when everyone else is fishing elsewhere. Topwataters and small gliders always get a lot of attention and we also throw #8 glittertails and spinnerbaits. Have a great weekend everybody.

| We had our slowest opener ever I think it was because they were removing the weeds all week it screwd up the water clarity still should have had a mid 40"s that was suicidal after a zippity do da but missed. Talked to a lot of guys on the cell list and there's a couple lakes in metro on fire. Nice warm and a couple hot days all this week should make for a great metro tournament on saturday |

Location: MN | Great to see that folks had some luck this weekend and that the lakes have a bite going. I'm going out Thursday somewhere in the metro with my neighbor who has to be almost 80. Were both have no clue so it should be fun. Ill post back our results.

| I fished a small lake on Saturday for a couple hours with no luck. Moved over to Mille Lacs yesterday and fished the Indian Point area for 2 hours on the way home. Had a mid to high 40's follow very lazily after only about 10 minutes of fishing. Couldn't get her to show herself again.

| Fished 30 hours or so saw 40 fish many over 50 inches mostly lazy following fish. Caught approximately 41 at 10 pm on a double 8. Had a monster eat a dog looked like a trash can engulfed it. Set the hook on seeing and feeling it. But it didn't shut its mouth yet. I can't believe the language I used in front of my dad on that. |

Location: Alex or Alek? | All of the fish we saw/caught came out of 8' cabbage patches. We had some cabbage up to the surface in 10' of water.
The one I caught someone had just passed by us fishing the shallows and we where fishing the outside edge, they literally drove over exactly where the fish hit about 1 min before. |

Location: Twin Cities | Buddy caught a 40" on Indy last Thursday on a bucktail. Saw several others but that was the only one in the net. Leech this weekend was very unexciting, a small one went for a bucktail on the figure 8 but didn't eat. That was the only muskie we saw all weekend. Weed growth is very weak so far out there.
