Hi guys, I am looking for a new trolling reel. I am thinking about going with the Okuma Convector. I have heard good things about them and they are not expensive at all. The CV-30D is the model I am looking at. Does anyone else run this exact model? Would like to get a review or two before buying. Also, I will be putting braid on it instead of mono.

The Okuma Convector 30 is a solid reel and have not had any issues, also have heard good things about Okumas Cold water series but have not tried them yet.

i run convectors, magdas and coldwaters. The coldwater I first used last year, probably best for small bait trolling and perfect as a sucker reel. Convector versus Magda: the convector is smoother, pulls baits in a little stronger, and the clicker is a tiny bit more reliable. BUT, I have run magdas for about 8/9 years and I've broken 2 out of the 10 (i have sets for muskies and for salmon) in that time. One because I tripped while trolling in 3-4'ers and my @ss landed on a handle, handle broke off. The other was when a former fishing partner reeled down and hammered a Canadian reef thinking it was a sucker. Bye bye anti-reverse, though easily fixed by the factory. Ie. either or is a good choice, but if you have the extra money for the convectors, you will be happier with them...if you're a rod/reel snob like me. Going with the magdas will be a good route too and you can buy more of them!

The magdas are goodreels, I have two that have caught many fish and are 15 years old. Their weak link is the anti reverse. They will not handle an extreme condition. The convectors are much smoother as are.the coldwater reels. You don't need the capacity of a 30 size but the power and the handle are very nice.

Is there something about the coldwaters that would make you hesitate to pull big baits with them? I'm just curious. I run Tekotas but need a couple more LC reels, was thinking about the coldwaters to save a little $$ over the Tekotas. I need to be able to pull plows, headlocks etc.

Also depending on what Size you have on these models the gear ratios are different.Example on coldwater series size 15 and 20 gear ratio is 5.1:1 whereas the size 30 and 45 have a 4.2:1 but offer a slightly higher line retrieval per turn then the 15 and 20 size. Also there is a low profile coldwater series and that is 5.4:1.Also the gear ratios vary on the convectors and magdas depending on which size you have.I only have used the size 30 convectors and have been very happy with them all around.Slamr just curious what size coldwater you were running?

Coldwaters or Convectors will pull big baits no problem; you can even go a step up with the Catalina. Okumas are hard to beat when it comes to value vs. quality. No less than 30 series...And the loudest clickers on the market!

Tekotas are good reels too, but not much better in relation to the cost difference to the Okumas....they have weak clickers IMO as well.

I would stay away from the Magdas all together for muskie trolling to be honest.

Good Luck

ToddM - The Shimano Tiagra is the perfect reel to match up with your new fighting chair w/ beer can holder. Sled would be soooo jealous!

convectors work well . on st clair they take daily beatings and do hold up. plus you have a decent clicker
