We have a new member in our muskie club that is wondering what kind of line people use. I use 80# and 100# Power Pro almost exclusively and have been for quite awhile. His question got me think about what other lines are out there these days. Let's fill this poll up with whatever brand of line you use or know anything about.  Please add any line not already list that muskie guys might use.  If you're using a line you really like or really hate, please reply and let us know why.  It would be interesting to know what pound test you're using, too.

Thanks!

Power Pro 50lb. test is my pick so far. I do have a spool of 50lb. Tuf Line Original salt and pepper sitting on my desk that i'm gonna try out when i need new line. I know most guys will laugh at 50# test but if you take care of it, it is plenty strong enough for the job!

I used to use Spectron until it became hard to find in green. I then switched to Power Pro and I will say. I have many new bees fish with me and with the PP the number of back lashes for them went way up. Also when they did get one it was bad. I have now switched to 80 lb Suffix and the number of back lashes with the new bees has gone way down.

I buy a 300 yd spool, put a backer on and then 75 yds of fresh line. In the off season I reverse it to expose the fresh stuff. I have been doing this for XX years without any problems.

Have a good week

Yes - I started off with PP 80# and switched to Masterbraid after a year or so. Eight years later I'm still using Masterbraid. It's a vastly superior product IMHO.

I like to tinker and experiment with lures, line, poles and reels. I have tried most of the lines on the list. Cortland Master braid is by far my favorite with one comment. It does retain water more than others so in late fall ... going into November I will use Suffix 832.

Most of my reels have 65lb PowerPro... thinking about trying some Hi-Seas Grand Slam 65lb braid. If you're fishing for IGFA record fish, the maximum permitted line strength is 80lb.

The Hi-Seas 80lb fluorocarbon is the toughest on the planet, I've tried all of them for my hand tied leaders - no crimps.

This is one of the best resources for all serious fisherman....

I started out with 80# power pro and after less then a season I switched to cortland and I'm much happier. Cortland is more suple then power pro and I haven't had any baits snap the line on a regular cast, not even a backlash, like I had happen with power pro. The cortland is thicker then the power pro, so if you do get a backlash you can fix it in about 10 seconds as opposed to minutes or having to cut it out like I experienced with power pro. The only downside to cortland is that it holds more water then power pro, which leads to wet hands.

I've been using 50 lb TUF original salt and pepper for over 15 years and never had an issue. I do have 80 lbs on a few reels, but my main bucktail reel that I throw 90% of the time has 50 lbs on it. I got 3 50 inchers and countless fish between 45 and 50 on this line. Never once had a break off.

I'm trying the green Cortland masterbraid on one reel this season as Rollie's was out of the bronzeback and I was in a hurry, we'll see...the reason I switched from PP is the dye coming off on my shirts, fraying, and Cortland is much more pliable from the start. IMO Cortland is far superior line in every way to PP(I used PP from 2001 until 2008), use it all the way up to freeze up with no issues.

Used to use PP 80# moss green but switched to Suffix 832 and couldnt be happier. Cast great less backlashes and holds less water. I hated PP 80# super slick in blue. Felt really odd thumbing the spool bled like crazy and the entire time I tried it I got 0 action. Didnt have any fraying or casting issues but I lost all confidence in it. Tried Courtland bronzeback and liked it but my tackle shop has been out of it for some time. In a pinch Ill still use reg PP.

I am slowly moving away from Power Pro simply because there are better lines out there....why? Smoother, last longer and get less fraying. I will pay a little more for better results. The poll will show Power Pro as the winner I'm sure and its NOT because its better....its just more readily available and cheaper.

I have used about every one on the list and my favorite two are Mason Tiger Braid and Tuf-Line XP

Back in the late 1990s when the superlines first came out, experimentation showed that superlines truly have no stretch and backlashes on line that's too light will snap. We were snapping off 1 or 2 lures per night in those first few days with 30# spiderwire and the original Berkley Gorilla braid which we ultimately determined was way too light. The line weight you chose shouldn't really be based on the weight of the fish you're after, it has more to do with the line's ability not to snap under the conditions you fish. For me, 50# is really too light and although it's not going to break on a single backlash, but it definitely will on repeated backlashes. Its diameter is too small and will wear when doing fig-8s after each cast where the rod tip guide is. I would recommend that you go no lighter than 65# for most applications. For me, though I use 80# line for most things and 100# for my big rubber (8oz Super Ds and Bull Dawgs on up).

Thanks to all who've contributed - I'm finding this poll very interesting. I'm not at all familiar with Cortland Masterbraid and with so many suggesting it, I might have to see what that's all about. I see one post from someone who likes it more than power pro. Can anyone else who uses it describe it in comparison to power pro and some of the other popular lines. Thanks much!

I like Suffix 832 but I must confess I use a GREAT mono from time to time. It's made by Mason Tackle Co and it's called Super Bass On. I use a 20 lb gray mono and have never once lost a fish. Hook sets are indeed challenging BUT I simply love the "quick release" I get at boatside in the net. No cutting hooks, no digging. Pop....out it comes once some slack is present.

Have been using Spiderwire Stealth on all my catfish rods for years and Musky rods for the past 3 years. I 100% recommend it for it's strength for catfishing and still like it for musky but it does lose its coating and fade and fray a bit after time. I just spooled up with the Blue Cortland Masterbraid and am 100% sold on it. Not only does it look badass on my Big Nasty and Revo NACL but it casts so far and so smooth it just shoots out of the line guides and you have to thumb your casts before they go up in a tree. We'll see how it does after time against frays but it's supposed to not fray and not bleed like the others. You couldn't give me Power Pro.

I started with PowerPro and after several issues I switched to Cortland and have been very happy. The ONLY advantage Powerpro has over Cortland is Powerpro holds less water. All other advantages go to Cortland. I've also tried Suffix 832 and was happy with it but they don't make 100lb.

Rodbender - you're exactly right about Power Pro. I can't stand the waxy layer and it has a memory when you bend it.

I believe TUF Line XP is the same way with that waxy outter layer. That's why I have stuck with TUF Original Salt and Pepper since I started musky fishing over 15 years ago.

I want to hear this also?

I went in this spring and had my reels all re-spooled with line. I was really tired after a long week and i don't know how but i told the guy to fill my reels with power pro.
I've always used Tuf line or master braid without a single issue. I see the majority has chosen power pro in the poll but some have claimed issues.

Should i be concerned?

I started with Power Pro and had a few lures snap off, line bleed, and it brought a lot of water in with it which got cold in fall. I switched to Suffix 832 and it helped all those issues but does not seem to hold up near as long. I am trying Cortland Masterbraid on all lines this year and will see what happens.

Always used PP 80 and 100 for big lures. Switched to Suffix 832 three years ago, definitely won't go back to PP. With all the good reviews of the Masterbraid from Cortland, might try someday, but for right now, 832 is the one.

Then use Power Pro. After years of using both I deduced from my experience that Power Pro is inferior to Cortland BB, and I/we are answering the OP's question to be helpful. Why is this "hating"?

I've used several.
PP first, It has been over 10 years since I've used PP, so it might have changed since I used it last.
PP just felt course. That was my biggest dislike.
I like the older green Cortland. Much smoother.
Ended up with spiderwire stealth. I fished cold weather alot and it held less mater than anything else I've tried at the time.
I have heard good stuff about suffix.
Might try that next time I need line.
