I just picked up 4 new Custom Predators this year as a present to myself, and one of them was a 9'6" H. I was thinking of mainly throwing smaller blades like Jr's and double 8's with it so I'm looking for some suggestions for a good high speed reel for some of these smaller blades. I currently run Shimano curado EJ's.
I won't spend the money on a Tranx nor did I like one when I had one, so that's out of the equation. What else do you guys like?

Location: Grand Marais, MN | why not keep your EJ? That's an awesome reel, I think the curado 300 are the most comfortable reels I have ever used. and plenty fast. would match a nice custom rod like a predator quite nicely. |

You are right!! They are a nice reel, but I like it more for smaller double bladed glitter tails or single bladed buck tails. I seem to lose my zip once I get into a larger Colorado blade, especially with doubles!! |

| The new diawa saltists are a good reel for a good price, 20 and 30 size reel in i think 35 inches per crank. |

| If you want speed and don't want a Tranx... I can't think of a better option than the ej you already have. I have an ej/big dawg combo and that's what I use for fishing Jr's fast.
Other reels to think about... Lexa 400 6.3 gears, Saltist 20, NACL HS, Calcutta 300D. |

Location: Hayward, WI | I'd check out the Toro NACL 6.4 ratio, and the Okuma Komodo 350 sounds nice. Never used one but have had pretty good luck with Okuma products.
I have a Saltist and it's ok for Cowgirls and good for Rubber, but I'm not sure I'd want one for smaller baits. They don't have any cast control other than spool tension and I don't think that would be my first choice for casting smaller baits. It would certainly burn them in though. |

| I love Shimano stuff but an EJ on a 9-6 for burning big stuff just won't work well, or a least a far ways back vs what does.
Better options IMO
Tranx is the king, bummer that you didn't like it.
Lexa is not a bad option, way less power factor than a tranx but better than most. Have to get the gearing right fore you is important.
400D or 400TE they are both awesome but on the slow side for burning...way slow.
Saltist's are a bit quirky but work for sure.
Trinidad in a 14 or 16 size...not the flavor of today but magnitudes of huge muskies were caught using them...and some top guys still do. A bit harder to cast well but do-able for anyone, great power and speed
Abu and the others I can't say as I have not used them at length but I have lived with all of the others at length. |
