Location: Clintonville, WI | It’s baaaack. Welcome to 2015 MuskieFIRST MatchFishing!
Although a participant in MatchFishing for several years in the past, I'm new to the organizational aspect of it. I've been tasked with getting this thing started.
*** There is more to come in terms of the set up and a lot of it is predicated on particpation #s and how smoothly the sign up is going. There will be a MatchFishing forum set up for ease of process so be patient. In the meantime, get a team set up per the rules and get ready to fish!
___________________________________________________________________
Teams will be assigned to one of four pools, North/South/East/West, depending on their general home location. Over the course of May - August each team is expected to fish a minimum of three “matches” against teams in their pool. Points are awarded depending on the outcome of the match: win, lose, or tie. At the end of the pool round, the team with the most points wins the pool and moves on to the playoff rounds starting in September and finishing with the MatchFishing Championship in October.
Participation is FREE, and there is a short list of requirements:
1. The group expects a commitment to participate in all respects – this was historically the biggest challenge and mostly why this went by the wayside.
2. You must have the ability to provide judges with digital pictures of your results
3. Respect the spirit of the event. The idea of MatchFishing is to incent getting out on the water with friends/family, to have fun and to have friendly competition.
4. Don’t cheat.
5. Don’t be “Richards” (the term my kids and I use in our house so as to not offend my wife’s sensibilities).
RULES
---------------------------------
Teams:
A team consists of one or two fishermen, fishing with each other from one boat at the same time. Teams may not have three people in the boat at any time during a match. If one of the team members is unavailable, a substitute may fill in, but one of the people fishing must be a team member.
Professional fishing guides are welcome to participate as competitors in MatchFishing with their own team, but teams may not hire a paid guide as a substitute team member.
In this set-up thread, please post a reply with the following: your team name / team location (i.e. OH, WI, WV, etc.) / names of team members / contact phone #s for each member / e-mail for each member / required two dates (minimum) for fishing availability.
Matches:
A match consists of two teams fishing against each other ON THE SAME DAY. Teams may fish different waters, but all fishing by both teams must take place between 12:00 am and 11:59 pm on the day of the scheduled match. For example…..A South team on vacation at LOTW can fish against another South team on vacation at Mille Lacs as long as it is on the same day.
***Three is the minimum number of matches everyone must fish because we will be counting each team’s best three matches in determining the Pool winners. Since we are anticipating enough teams for four pools of four teams each, you will be required to fish against all three teams and all three matches will count. If we get a lot of participation and pools have more than four teams, you may choose to fish against every team, but only your top three match results will be counted. For example, let’s say a Pool has seven teams (A/B/C/D/E/F/G). Team A in the Pool schedules its first three matches against B/C/D and wins all three with a 35” fish each match. They may elect to not fish against the other three teams and let it ride. Team B may have lost to Team A but elects to fish all five other teams and beats E/F/G with a 36” fish each match. Team B would beat Team A. This twist does provide for an element of strategy but is primarily there to incent fishing as much as possible.
Each team has until 12:00 pm (noon) the day after their match to submit photos and results. The date/time received on our cell phones and/or email will be the official record so make sure you send them as soon as you can after your match. Teams failing to report results by then will not be given points for any fish they may have caught that day. No exceptions. We will place results and images in the 2015 MatchFishing Reports Thread. That thread will be locked. No other reports will be allowed. DO NOT POST YOUR OWN RESULTS in another forum! Photos and results must be sent to:
Andrew Golden (Slamr)
[email protected]
(847) 989-9271
Mike Morse (BigMo)
[email protected]
(920) 213-0898
No rematches are allowed during the pool play rounds. Each match will be scored according to the results on the day of the match: win, lose, or tie.
Scheduling:
As long as you are fishing water on or after its seasonal opening date, Pool matches can begin at Midnight May 2, 2015 and must conclude by 11:59 pm August 31, 2015.
When each team signs up, they are required to provide two days during each of the months of June/July/August that they guarantee they will be available to fish a match. Teams will not be entered into MatchFishing until they provide these dates. If another team in their pool challenges them (by posting it online) to fish on one of the days they provided, the match will take place on that day unless both teams agree to change it.
If a team is a “no-show” on an agreed upon match date, the match still counts. The absent team will simply receive 0 points. Please be flexible and do everything you can to schedule matches and honor the commitments, or communicate with other teams for rescheduling. 90+ days should be more than enough to get Pool matches in. There were some issues in the past with anglers that had an odd schedule for work and/or life; for example, those that are able to fish a lot from Mondays-Thursdays. Everyone has to be flexible and put the effort into making the scheduling work. Again, 90+ days should be sufficient to make pool play work.
Items:
Once a match is scheduled, teams will be assigned an item of some sort. This item must be visible in a picture taken with any muskies they catch on the day of the match. We will try to make it unique and interesting. The judges will provide items via MuskieFirst, text, e-mail or cell call no sooner than one day before the match. Failure to include the item in the photograph disqualifies that fish from scoring points. No exceptions. Items will not be given out early under any circumstance.
Scoring:
Points for Qualifying Fish:
Minimum size of 35”
35” = 5 points
every 1” above that earns 1 point
any ½” is rounded up
Points for Pool Standings:
2 points for the team that wins the match
1 point for each team if there is a tie (equal points for all qualifying fish caught)
1 point for a losing team if they participate in a scheduled match (must be supported by each team with a photo with the item shown)
0 points for losing a match for non-participation in a scheduled match.
The team with the highest point total wins the pool.
Tie-breaker for winning the pool will be largest fish caught during pool play.
Playoff Rounds:
The winner of each pool will advance to the playoff round. Each team will be seeded according to their FISH POINT total from Pool play. #1 will fish head-to-head versus #4, #2 will fish head-to-head versus #3. The first Playoff Round (semi-final) clock will begin at Midnight on September 1, 2015. These two matches must be completed by 11:59 pm on September 30, 2015.
The winners of the Playoff Round will advance to the Championship. The Championship period is Midnight October 1, 2015 through 11:59 pm on October 31, 2015.
During the playoff round and championship, rematches will be allowed in the case of ties until one team wins. If neither team is able to win a match before the end of the time allowed, total Fish Points from all qualified matches will determine the winner.

Location: Clintonville, WI | Teams that signed up in this thread, please check your e-mail. You are the 12 teams competing in 2015. The rules and general information have been updated in a document I attached to the message.
The 12 teams entered happen to be split 4 each from WI / IA / MN. So, I changed the pool set up. We will be having a battle of the states for bragging rights!
Until a Forum is set up for MatchFishing, please post the matches you have set up in this thread.
Regulation where you are/will be permitting, matches may start this Saturday May 2 @ Midnight. Have at it.............and have fun!

Set it up with specifics as we get closer to those months and we can bounce a few midweek days off each other, if you're okay with that?

Location: Clintonville, WI | There are two matches coming up this weekend. For those teams, watch your PM inbox here for your items within 24 hours ahead of your match.
For those that have not participated before, the items will be easily transported and manageable in the boat. That doesn't mean they won't be silly or maybe even embarrassing......just that they will be easy to handle.
Examples of items in the past include a minnow bucket (which resulted in the iconic MatchFishing photo of Steve Jonesi wearing a styrofoam minnow bucket on his head in the fish photo), a softball, a plunger and a stuffed animal. |

Side note, if you can embarrass me, you are a champ. |

Location: Clintonville, WI | The first matches of the year are this weekend in the MN and IA regions.
Team Tretsven vs Fargo Yacht Club (MN) and Team Red Ranger vs Team Red Baron (IA) are on for 6/6/15. For the 6/6/15 matches, you may choose from the following items:
-- a flower stuck somewhere on your person. In your hat, glasses, pocket, behind your ear......whatever works.
-- a ladies necklace worn in the picture
-- a 40 oz can of beer
These items will also be sent via PM.
Any fish photos and info from 6/6/15 must be sent to me by noon on 6/7/15. Email or text are fine.
***Item options for the 6/7/15 match will be posted here tomorrow and in the teams' PM. If you will not have access to internet, call my cell and I'll give the items to you verbally.

nice fish tretsven. Glad someone else had some luck on opener. We had 2 other fish up that day but the boat spooked them each time. Darn storms kept us off the lake the majority of the afternoon!

There are lots of matches in July, but quite a few matches still need to be scheduled. I should be current with my match tracking through the 7/23/15 match between Musky Nuts and River Musky. Please continue to work with the other teams to schedule your matches and post them here. |

Work has been nuts. A lot of M&A activity going on that needs serious attention but I'm going to try sneak away tonight or tomrorow night to get at MatchFishing. That way I can get the next item options out for Thursday too.

Location: North St. Paul, MN | River Musky fished a match against bucknuts.
We (river musky) caught one 40" fish, had another fish hit, another follow, and a nice 45-47" hit a pacemaker close to dusk...had it stuck for a second and then quickly off.
The bubble gum bubble in the picture wasn't the greatest, but it was there...:o) |

-- Stick your tongue out in the photo (channell your best Gene Simmons)
-- show your fishing license in the photo
-- have beef jerky in your mouth or in the photo
Looks like I had almost everything correct for the match results. Jones will send me a follow-up and I'll correct the one thing I left off for them.
I'll post match item choices for the 8/2 match tomorrow.

Location: Clintonville, WI | Keeping all participants up to date......I'm at grad school for on campus work the next two weeks.
My priority is to get items posted the day before any matches between today and 8/15. Please check posts here or PM's for your items.
The lesser priority is updating results. I do have all the results from the 8/1 and 8/2 matches. I also have to work on the corrections from the matches up to 8/1. I'll try to find some time to work on that but no guarantees during the next two weeks.
LOTS of fish being caught! More than I can recall in many years of the past. Keep up the good fishing and enthusiasm. It makes this fun.

Location: Clintonville, WI | Ok, gang.......I'm caught up based on all the revised results and last matches you all fit in your schedules!! There was some good fishin' going on this summer. Way to go everyone. Alas, not everyone moves on. Here are the pool results:
WI
Team Mitchell - 15 total points
92 Bucky - 2 total points
Tail Chasers - 2 total points
Team Worrall - 0 points
IA
Red Ranger - 48 points
Red Baron - 3 points
Team Gurkha - 3 points
Team Jones - 3 points
MN
River Musky - 73 points
Team Tretsven - 40 points
Fargo Yacht Club - 15 points
Musky Nuts - 14 points
So, the semi-final playoff matches are as follows:
#1 Seed River Musky vs #4 Seed (wild card) Team Tretsven
#2 Seed Red Ranger vs #3 Seed Team Mitchell
You have until 11:59 pm on 9/30/15 to get your playoff matches done. Same drill in that you will communicate with each other to get the match dates set and post them here. I will send you your item choices for photo verification the day before your match.
**** Remember......during the semi-final round, in the case of ties, you must fish a rematch(s) until one team wins. If neither team is able to win a match before the end of the time allowed, total points from all pool play matches will determine the winner.
Good luck and thanks so far for your enthusiastic participation! |

Location: Clintonville, WI | Thanks for the compliments. It wasn't always as tight on my side of things as I would have liked but I'm glad you enjoyed it anyway. I also applaud you all because the patience and enthusiasm of the teams was as important as anything else.
At this point, I would envision doing this again next season. We will take this year's revival of MatchFishing, make improvements and have fun with it.
The key will be to get more participants so please spread the word. This year happened to work out where we had the pools set up by State. But, I don't have any preconceived ideas of how the pools get set up so let's start with getting more anglers involved and go from there.
Now let's work on getting this year closed out with a bang......one semi-final is set with one more pending!! |

Location: North St. Paul, MN | Thanks Nate - I was really worried that wasn't going to be enough...especially the way you've been putting them in the boat all year. That one missed a Hang 10 three different casts, but ate a small 5" firetiger playmaker. Only saw 2 or 3 more fish all day...both smaller than that one, so I don't think they would've been legal for the match.
Some days it's better to be lucky than good. I/we were super lucky. |

I hope it works for Mitchell and Ranger to fish this weekend |

Then, I'd love to fish the final the weekend of the 24/25. Were not going to be able to fish this weekend then were both out of town for awhile after that. You and Red Ranger should just try and set up a finals match. Team Mitchell is out for the year |

| I thought we talked about the 24th and 25th, but then i got the text and the message here only talking about the 25th. We kinda planned a sturgeon fishing trip to baudette friday and satureday, then stop by a lake around bemidji to fish our match Sunday and fish alittle monday before we head home. Would it be a huge deal if you fish sat and sun and we fish sun and mon? |

Location: Clintonville, WI | I'll leave the 2 day versus 1 day thing up to the two teams. You just need to let me know what you decide so I can get the items communicated to you properly.
In any case, the intent of MatchFishing was to make it a same day competition. I'd like to keep that spirit in tact.
Regardless, there needs to be some thought given to a rematch possibility(s) if there is a tie (no matter one day or two).

Location: Clintonville, WI | We have a CHAMPION for 2015! Minnesota can claim the crown.
River Musky prevailed over Red Ranger this past weekend. Red Ranger had a tough go of it, so while it only took one fish for River Musky to win, they put it out of reach with four......37" / 35" / 35.5" / 41".
Stay tuned here for some end of season MatchFishing closure. I'll hopefully be able to wrap this up in the next couple weeks.
** If you enjoyed the season, please talk to other anglers about MatchFishing for 2016. I was a participant for several seasons about 8-10 years ago but this was my first go at being the point person. So, it will get better. If we have enough participants next season (hopefully more than this year) I expect to be doing this again. We'll tweak things a bit, make some improvements and have some friendly competition.
