I have been fishing a similar style for a long time, but tried jigging last year a few times with no success. My biggest problem has been getting over the "feeling lost" problem, where I just feel like an idiot out there trying this new technique. But I am going to really spend time this year jigging, both rivers and lakes.

I am just wondering, for those of you who are experienced jigging, what are a couple tips to help my learning curve? Any advise is really appreciated.

Hey guys. One thing I tell people in my seminars is that you must burn it into your mind that this technique works or you'll never have enough confidence to stick with it. I also push them to spend at least one solid weekend focusing deeper than 20ft, either by fishing those depths or just spending the day graphing for a while first. And remember the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary!

Are you talking vertical or bass style?, with reaper tail or grub tail? Cause I started doing that last year with no success. I know its a very proven technique in Wisconsin, I'm just not sure what I'm doing wrong.

What I like to do in SE Wisco is to make a trolling pass or two to find bait, hooks, fishy looking areas. I'll mark them on the gps, then have a good idea of what depth to target.
When I'm in N Wisco, I'll just motor around areas to find bait/hooks, then mark up those areas and go to it.

Once I know these areas, I'll set op a nice drift through the areas. Make sure to watch your jig on the locator as you'll see muskies following the jig at times, and know you'll have to trigger them. Make adjustments to your jig depth based on where you're seeing bait, hooks etc. don't be afraid to change jig colors if you're marking bait and muskies and not getting bit.

Hope that helps get ya started.

Start in current. The fastest current you can find. Let the current help you cover water. Focus on key spots just like you would if you were casting. Dont drift for hours straight, rather make smaller more precise drifts over whatever structure youre fishing and pull up and do it again, and again, and again, then repeat. Dont ever lose contact with your bait at the top of your stroke, and once you set hook go straight to the reel handle cause theyll turn upwards in a hurry and you'll have no leverage if you dont. If youre trying to fish in any kind of cover or in contact with the bottom, get a bait with single hooks or youre going to be hung up constantly. Either way a good lure retriever will save you dollars in the end. Good luck.
