What would be the ultimate river/small lakes boat...how would you set it up...trolling motor, electronics, etc.

Thanks,

Depending on river size, flat bottom, semi-v at the most; I like a wide boat, makes it easier to stand up in. A 9.9 will be ok if the river is not too big, and a jet motor is tops, w/ a minimum of 30 hp. Some peeps here use the suction cup transducers on the smaller rivers. Down Easter rod holders are great too and bolt easily on the aluminum rigs. Get a river anchor for sure; you can throw it out and fish a rift or eddy in detail. Rivers like those that Richard Collins fish are a whole different ball of wax...

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin

In Glass, the Patriot 1690 draws less than 10" fully loaded, and runs over 25 MPH with a 25 HP 4 Stroke. The 1690 is a 24 degree V with reverse chines for stability. The Tuffy Esox, a modified tri-hull, is another great current rig. The Esox needs about 30 HP at the minimum.

Both are 'low profile' rigs allowing easy boat side releases, and provide a great platform. Bow mount 40# electric, and a couple simple sonars and rod holders, and the rig is ready to go.

MJB:

I had a 14ft Lowe Johnboat that came with a raised carpeted deck, livewell, raised swivel seats and was powered by a 15 hp tiller. I fished the Tennessee and Susquehanna Rivers and several small lakes for bass and cats. That boat was awesome and just the ticket for such waters. When I found myself living and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay, I bought a 20' Wellcraft cuddy cabin stern-drive and gave the Lowe to my son who lives in Ohio. He fishes several small lakes and rivers for multi species along with Clearfork Reservoir for muskies. Now living in Wisconsin, there has been more than one occasion when I wished I still had that small Lowe rig for my musky sojurns to the nothwoods. If you can locate such a rig, I'll guarantee you that you will find it super for the fishing conditions you have specified.
