How many relatively unknown musky lakes do you know of? For example, lakes that have been illegally stocked, you may have come across fishing for other species besides musky. We only have one "musky" (that is considered a muskie lake by the dnr) lake around here, but supposedly almost every lake on this small river chain has muskies in it. There is a non musky lake right across the road from this musky lake where everyone I have talked to with any knowledge of the area lakes says it has some muskies. It would make sense being so close to each other. Now, I have been discussing this topic with the area bait shop owners. One very knowledgable owner (we've been going to him for 20 years, he has owned the bait shop for 30+) says that this lake acrossed from the musky lake is basically a designated musky lake, that they have been in there since 1967. Everyone else has no doubt that they are in there, yet do not spawn. What are the chances of this being a full blown musky lake? Would you spend any time fishing it for muskies? How much time would you give it?
Thanks

I kind of have one to that nature. I have a local lake I learned about the stocking program just recently. 2000 muskies have been stocked in the past 6 or 7 years. I know there is pretty much zero musky pressure on the lake and from asking around the only people who have caught a musky there did it while targeting other species. I intend to fish this lake quite regularily this year. I hope it will turn in to a producer. It will save me the 1.5 hour drive I need to make now to the Cities to fish.

I hear stories every year about lakes up or down stream from a stocked lake that people are reporting catches. Look at some of your favorite lakes, then check a map for stream inlets and outlets. Right off hand, I can think of 8 lakes that are not in the muskie program, but have muskies in them, 2 of them have, what I think are fishable populations.

In Minnesota, this may be the easiest way to get lakes added to the muskie program. Look at a map of the Pelican Lake area, that is part of a pretty big chain. Now look at the lakes that are part of that chain. Man, there are some lakes that could produce some big fish, now they just need to start moving around a bit.

Some thing in Wisconsin, I know of 4 lakes that are downstream from stocked lakes that have fishable muskie populations. The people that find them try to keep the lid on them, but it only takes one....

I know of a couple lakes that are not designated muskie lakes, but have streams, and rivers running through them that have muskies present up stream, and down. They don't have a real fishable population, but do have fish cruising through. The DNR has caught muskies in test nettings which they noted in their reports saying they most likely came from these other bodies of water. I would give a try to these lakes on occasion, but would not expect much.

There are literally dozens of lakes and rivers here that fit that description. The Pelican River right across from my house has a very good population, but isn't fished at all, hardly. Lakes and flowages with a class B or C population listed are frequently VERY fishable because of small size or limited 'good' structure, so the fish are easy to find, even though the population is low when compared to Class A lakes.

Sworral,
I tried to fish that little river one day and it was a battle for me but didn't raise a fish. Maybe this year.

There are some pigs in there, big 'eyes, too. If you launch on HWY 8 by the crick near HwyC, you can hit my place with a stone.

I was looking for an unknown musky lake, but because I didn't know about it I couldn't find it.
