| Hey fly guys,
I am debating upon what wt fly rod to get. Is a 12 wt rod overkill because I plan on using it like a big rubber rod ro throw big flies for late season musky.

| Did the same research a few months back. 12w are generally "fighting" rods more than casting rods because of the fish they're used for. Muskies typically use a 10 or 11 weight. |

Location: Waukee, IA | The 12 weight rods I have used for tarpon were definitely not fighting rods. They casted well and performed beautifully while casting. For fly fishing for muskies use a 10, 11 or 12 weight and good line. You should be able to cast almost any fly with a good 11 weight. |

| And as far as a reel goes most guys say you dont need a good one as musy dont run alot. Is this true? |

Location: Waukee, IA | Reels aren't of paramount importance but a decent drag and a nice feel are nice. Top end reels for saltwater are unnecessary, as muskies will never go on a blistering 100 yd run. Line and rod are where you get the most return for your money, in that order. Make sure when buying line to get a big fly or pike/muskie taper. |

| Ive used up to 12 weight for tarpon, but honestly I sized the rod off of the fly being presented not necessarily the fish I'm targeting. I use a 10 weight for the muskie size flies I throw a few days a year. I agree with tkuntz, line and rod are the most important. People have been catching big fish on fly rods with crappy reels for a LOOOOOOOOONG time hehe |

Yup.
A bit of something I've learned...Use a reel that you can "kick" the exposed spool rim with your off hand to take up line quickly so you can fight him off of the reel.
I use a Ross CLA-5. Spins readily and has a nice drag "if" needed. Only really needed mine a few times though.

| X2 on the good drag, the fish will wear them out if you don't have a good drag system. |

| I don't have much to add. I think the most important point made is the value of a good line that is properly matched with the rod. Good line will make the difference between a comfortable outing vs. a physically taxing outing after casting a 10wt/11wt all day. |
