Does anyone know the years and sizes of motors that are "compatible" with each other? I have an '88 Evinrude 40hp longshaft with a bad lower unit. Chance to pick up an early '80's Evinrude 35hp very local for cheap.

Just wondering if anybody could help to let me know if parts would be interchangeable.

Thanks in advance, Jake

Get the model numbers of both motors, go to a online parts look up and see if they are the same part numbers.

There are at least 2 OMC owners forums with some great factory trained tech's that are glad to answer questions. Do a google search, it is well worth it.

w/o serial numbers there is no way to tell. with them it is an easy find. post them here and somebody can jump in and help or send me a p.m. and I can look for you.

Hiya,

My gut instinct says they will not match. I believe the 35 was a motor size all on it's own based on the same design as the 25 hp series. I do not believe the foot will be the same...
