The only one I've used is made by Matt Wirth. I think it was a great bait and the fish loved it! I think you have to order one way ahead of time, as he makes them himself so it takes a while.

x2 On Matt's flaptail. They are all made to order, well worth it though. You could try picking up a flaptail off of Lee Tauchen. Equal in quality to Matt's and readily available.

After fishing flaptails for forty years +, I have learned that very few catch fish consistently. The ones that do are rare gems and killers of large muskies, especially at night. The following is what has worked for me, your millage may vary:

My flaptails are based on the original Heddon and modified by Dave Snoddy.

!. Cedar is the best choice for wood. After turning, the specific gravity of each piece spun in a pail of water until the bottom point is located is critical.
2. The tail should not spin 360 degrees, about 180 to 190 is right. The tail should flip water side to side in rhythum on a slow retrieve.
3. A 6" straight wire in front can be used to adjust pull buoyancy up or down which is critical.
4. The brass tail needs to be slightly indented to achieve the proper rotation and sound.

Now if you have one that does all those things, you have a Musky catching machine on your hands. Especially good at night over rock reefs or deep weeds.

I think we tend to overthink this stuff sometimes. Iv'e had fish on my Sennett Flaptail and my Smity Snodlow. Two very different designs, both seem to get the attention of the fish. I think the trick is more finding the proper speed of each particular bait that maximizes the noise...its different for each bait (even within the same bait design).

Thanks for the kind words guys. I make the wirth flaptails And will say they are my favorite although I may be a bit biased. I will say I put alot into my baits and try to provide the nicest possible. Wirth Baits is my fbook page if you want to check them out although I won't be taking orders until next winter at the moment. other than mine I would go with the Wick baits as they flat out rock
