I'm trying to figure out what poles to use with TX-44 boards this upcoming summer - I've never trolled with the large boards in the past. Do you think using an 8' XH rod would be overkill? Or is there a reason against using a stiffer pole b/c it would affect the action of the bait? Just curious what other people used and liked/disliked.

It would work, but it would not be my rod of choice for inlines...I'd get yourself some planer board rods, dipsy rods or even downrigger rods....7.5' to 8' MH action. I like the more flexy rods to take up shock of the constant bouncing of those boards. And they cost less money.

Of the above a dipsey rod. I use an 8'6" dipsey rod. I also have downrigger rods but they load up on just a standard planet board. The others mentioned will load up way too much. You can also use the to you mentioned.

If you are on a budget the Shimano TDR Heavy is a great rod. It will stand up to the TX44. I've run up to 16" custom X on this rod. These rods are softer and I think give better action to cranks. As an added bonus they are a 2 piece so they store easily.

If you want to troll bucktails then you are going to want a firmer rod with some backbone. I use my custom Thorne trolling rod for this presentation.

YMMV
