I need a new starting battery. I have a 90hp ETec; the 2 Lowrance 520C's and the lights run off the starting battery. Looking at an Interstate size 24 (XHD) marine cranking w/ 1000 MCA and a DEKA size 27 dual purpose w/ 900 MCA. Price is within a couple bucks for either. I don't troll more than a few minutes in an average day, and night fish a couple hrs. about 6 times a year. Any advice on which battery would be the best option? AGM batteries are currently out of my budget.

Both of those batteries would work for starting your engine, but the dual purpose Group 27 will have a much longer reserve time for your graphs, lights, livewell, etc... After running those all day you wouldn't have to worry about starting your engine. With the group 24 starting battery, you might be out of juice.

Check the price on an Interstate 27MXHD, would work well for what you are doing.

Get a dual purpose. I had problems running my cranking battery down with the electronics running all day. I've had good luck with the Fleet Farm brand.

I have been using Interstate batteries for a long time. I get good life out of my Interstate starting and trolling batteries. I can say the Interstate is a good choice. That's all I will buy now, I get about 7 to 8 years out of both applications. I also charge the trolling batteries up after each use and the boats are garage kept when not used.

You'd have absolutely no issue with that 24 Interstate and I'd choose that over the Dekka. I run the same battery in my 690 Tiller, two big screens, and radio with 4 speakers on for hours. Starting batteries typically last me 5 years.
