Location: Carney, Mi (in da UP eh!) | Hi All, just a reminder to those that will be purchasing a Michigan Fishing License to make sure you get your FREE MUSKY TAG whether you intend to use it or not, apparently there is some discussion about how few tags that were given out last year might show a limited interest in Musky fishing in Michigan...below is a quote from an email I received
"I am aware most of your members never keep muskie but MI DNR knowing many anglers catch and release have brought the number of muskie tags issued to suggest there is limited interest in muskie. Even though they don't want to keep muskie you should probably encourage your members to take the free tag just to note their specific interest in MUE."
My experience is that you must ask for the tag even the local sport shops forget about asking the buyer if the would like one. PLEASE ASK FOR YOUR MUSKY TAG EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT PLANNING ON USING IT

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Randy - Might want to ask your source where this came from... I find it very hard to believe that ANYONE in the MI-DNR would think more than 100,000 tags issued in 2014 is "limited interest". |

| You just need to ask for it when you buy your next license. There's no cost. Many license vendors have no idea it's even an option, so if you don't ask, you may not get offered. But to answer your question: yes, you can get them through the MDNR website when you buy a license.

As license purchasers we are typically tax-payers also. The dnr system does not run on license sales alone. My original point was that there is always a cost to someone down the line. |

Location: Watersmeet, Michigan | In addition to showing interest in muskies and sturgeon, in the unfortunate event that a fish is fatally injured, it can be harvested. Sad, but better than it going to waste.

Location: one foot over the line | Was just pokin a little fun waitin for open water. I actually like the idea of a muskie tag and would be more than willing to pay extra money for it, with the understanding that the funds raised would go directly back into that fishery. |

That could go either way, if there's lots of spearing interest then it could lead to a reduced season. If there's more interest in spearing that previously thought there would obviously be a need to reduce exploitation.
