Hi all ,I'm either getting a 150 E-Tec or a 150 4 Stroke Merc. Will a 4 stroke last longer as in terms of hours or life than a 2 stroke?
Thanks,
Gmanny

Last 'longer'? Not necessarily, both are solid motors. Determine which you want based upon overall performance, cost, and the dealership that will support you after the sale with service.

I really like the Mec 4 stroke 150, a solid motor.

I like the 4 stroke. Don't have to worry about bringing oil with ona long trip. Change oil and lower unit once a year and I'm good that and the boat I have uses a rear side compartment for the oil tank.so going 4 stroke I get more storage. I have the Yamaha F 150 great motor

Both have pros and cons. I ran a 4stroke the last 3 years and I really like it for being quiet and only having to change the oil once per season. In fact im picking up my new boat Saturday with another 4stroke (Yamaha F150), but I will say my first boat had a 90 etec. The low end torque absolutely amazing and hole shots are great. I love the ease of ownership of 4strokes but I do miss the snap of that etec! Not really that big of deal to add oil when needed so buy whatever has the best dealer near you. You will love either motor.

I'll echo Dan. 2 strokes have amazing performance, but 4 strokes are really, really easy to live with. I run a Honda right now and feel they make the best 4 strokes, but I'll go Yamaha next because it's easier to find a dealer.

2 stroke as the main motor and 4 stroke kicker, best of both worlds.

On my 130 E-Tec I think I am at one 3 gallon jug of oil for the year if that. Fuel efficiency is incredible along with performance. Plus, the fact that I can winterize it in 5 minutes is a bonus and the first maintenance on it will be this year. Had for just over 3.

With today's outboards I doubt it makes much diff. on the longevity issue.

I had a 115 2 stroke Yammy on my '97 boat w/o one single issue. Wonderful motor. I have a 150 4 stroke Yammy on my new boat now.

My sugg., if you can afford it, go with the 4 stroke w/o a second thought. You'll love the ease of it and quiet smoothness. It'd be a no-brainer if I lost this one..!!

I've had more than a couple friends say "Man, this things smooth!"

Whatever the brand you choose, I prefer a 4 strokes , less stink, less to do, quieter. Although 2 strokes could help with bug repellant I suppose.

The new DFI 2 stroke burn as clean and even cleaner than today's 4 strokes.

Suppose not, I guess....

Steve you could very well be correct, I have yet to be exposed to the DFI 2 stroke, all 2 strokes I have been around smoke and stink (As in smell bad ) to me. Its your site who am I to disagree, it was just my opinion, am I entitled to that ?

Paul - yes the Tuffy sold. It was a sad day, almost shed a tear watching her go down the road. Decided to get a new Skeeter MX1825 so I guess you guys will have to lose to a Skeeter instead of a Tuffy this year in league! That's assuming Josh will even talk to me again after leaving Tuffy haha!

Sure, and I hope this thread helped inform you as to how clean the new 2 strokes burn.

Did a repower 2 years ago and had my dealer mount the new Merc 150 4 stroke and a Evinrude E-tec 115 H.O. Which puts out 130 hp. Liked them both but felt the E-tec had much better hole shot torque and was just as quiet as the Merc. Having put 130 hours on my E-tec i am very happy with it. These new 2 strokes cannot be compared to the old 2 strokes at all! They are quiet, have NO smoke at all, start, idle and troll down to 2 mph with ease. The automatic fogging for storage is just fantastic on the E-tec, at the end of the season on my last trip of the year I activate it at the dock, walk up to my truck and it has completed its fogging cycle and shut itself down by the time I back the trailer down to the water! As for gas mileage it's just as good as my old 150 Yamaha.
Yea I have spent 120 dollars on injection oil but I have not needed to spend any money on oil changes, oil filters or my time doing oil/filter changes so I consider it a wash as far as that goes. I am a somewhat of a mechanical fanatic and feel that the level of engineering coming from BRP is at a much higher level that has trickled down from their aviation, train transportation divisions into consumer products divisions. BRP ATV's, snowmobiles and outboards just seem to have a much higher level of sophistication than many other products available.

I like DFI 2 Stroke for main power, the new DFI are not your old 2 stroke I ran a 200 Opti for 9 years you would be hard pressed to smell the exhaust. I switched to the Etec G2 this year waiting to get it out, the ETEC's are 4 stoke quiet, the Opti has mean snarl to them.

I like the powerband and torque a DFI 2 Stroke has over the 4 stoke. I did run a 115 Yamaha also great motor also.

The trend is more 4-strokes and less 2-strokes. I'd have no problem getting a used Optimax but if I was buying new I would opt for newer technology over old.

Paul kind of hit it on the head.

I had several Optimax motors. GREAT motors. I even took a guy fishing one day and he said "boy that 4 stroke is nice, you can't even hear it" Ha. But when I purchased my new boat I went with the newer technology which for me was the Merc 150 - 4 stroke. It has been a very good motor so far, but all it takes is one cheap electronic component made over seas that can change any of them!

After I sold my rig with the Opti on it I figured I would just give the left over oil to a buddy or sell it cheap. WOW, that's when I realized all my buddies had 4 strokes and it took me 9 months to find someone who would buy the left over oil I had cheap.

From a performance stand point both the newer 4 strokes and Opti style are probably too close to measure, but from an envirnomental stand point the current 2 strokes are getting a bad rap and we will probably see the number of 2 strokes available continue to go down.

Hey, have a good day.

Following up on the site owner's comments....the two strokes performance is unmatched, the 2 strokes of late are higher general performance than four strokes, clean burning, quiet, fuel efficient....so the critical factor is what's the manufacturer's and local service plan and availability.
