Location: Wisconsin | IM heading to cave run for a couple days in the middle of this month. For those of you that have spent time on cave run during this time of year, what baits should I be taking and which ones should I leave behind? I'm driving down, and don't need to over pack my car  |

Location: NE PA | Rattle baits, tubes, gliders, suicks, some small deep divers for short-line trolling... Leave the blades, pounders big jakes/grandmas at home. If you have a heavy action flippin stick for bass and a high speed reel, take that for the rattle baits... |

Location: South-Central PA | Yep, what Lenny said. I take a handful of rattlebaits in 3/4 and 1oz sizes and some of Tony's Fat Belly Rattlers. Orange and chartreuse are good colors. I also take some gliders in the 6-8" range. Anything shad, white, chartreuse, or orange. You don't need to take much.
If you're planning on throwing rattlebaits, use a rod with a soft, forgiving tip. Like Lenny said, flipping sticks are a great option as most of them have a mod-fast action.
I'm heading down the last weekend in March, would you mind letting me know how you do?

Btw, if you use rat-l-traps, or other bass traps, upgrade the hardware on them...

Location: Columbus, Georgia | There is also a balsa shallow-running crank bait made by AC Shiner Co. out of Ohio. You want the 00 model. Killer bait back in the back of Cave Run creeks. Do a search, and get you a few.

| I have a feeling that it is going to flood like it did in 2011 with all the snow melting and all the rain that is expected. I hope it does, it was my most productive spring. |

I am talking about flooding...
I'm sure that will be a concern for the OP, but I won't be there for a month to the day. I expect that by then the water will have leveled out. |

| 2011 I was still trolling the zilpo parking lot memorial weekend. There is a lot of water up here in Cincinnati at the mouth of the licking, they will hold water for flood control pourpose at the cave. I hope there is high water personally. That year water was nearly up to the road @ ramey. It has not been this wet the last three years. If the typical rains in march/april does not come it will just be at summer pool earlier.

Are you saying that should the spring rains hold off the lake will be stabilized by the beginning of april, even with the huge amounts of snow Kentucky has received? |

| I will have a better idea when I head down next weekend for a few days.
I will probably have to launch at Alfrey as water will probably be up to the parking lot at Clay lick.
Unless rains pick up It won't be anywhere close to 30' above summer pool like it was in 2011, but if it does I think it could get up to 15'-20' over easily.
Currently it is a 1.5' above summer pool.

| I know this is a tough question to answer. Obviously, musky fishing is unpredictable; however, I was hoping to get some feedback about fishing Cave Run in mid to late March. Is that a time of the year where casting is productive. I am planning a trip with my brother, who is not at all interested in trolling. Over a 3-4 day period, is it realistic to expect each fisherman to land a few fish? I know it's a tricky question but I am from Wisconsin and I do not want to drive all the way to Kentucky if the fishing is typically slow that time of year. I do plan on hiring a guide for the first couple days to shorten the learning curve. Just looking for some good old honest feedback. Thanks! |
