Just got back from a week of family vacation in Florida. Lots of fun and sun, including a day's deep sea fishing and catching Bob Weir's band, Ratdog.

The deep sea fishing was a bust. Very lame. 35 people with heavy, sloppy worn out rods/reels dropping lines stright down next to the boat. Lots of tangles. The line was 100# mono and for the most part people were catching 14" fish. I couldn't feel a thing on my rod, though twice a little extra weight(?) turned out to be foot-long groupers. My hook was rusty and dull and the 5' leader was nicked all to hell and when I asked for a replacement one of the guides took a look and said, "Hell, yours is lots better than the guy next to you." So I searched for a file and at least sharpened the hook. Only one guy caught a keeper grouper on the boat, the rest of the fish kept looked like fat crappies. I wouldn't recommend such a trip to anyone.

But the show was lots of fun....

Bob Weir played a very small (1,500 person) outdoor venue in St. Pete called Janus Landing. The 6-person band sounded just great, even the sound check that I snuck in for. Here's the set list for you fans on the M1 board...

4/17/2003 Jannus Landing, St. Petersburg, FL
S: Jam > Loser > Jam
Set I: Jam > Dark Star (Instrumental) > Jack Straw > Odessa, Easy to Slip > Supplication > Little Red Rooster > Dark Star
Set II: El Paso@3>4 > Corrina@ > This Time Forever@ > Shade of Grey, Jam > Mississippi Half-Step > The Other One > Dear Prudence > Dark Star > Cassidy
E: Brokedown Palace
"Born Cross-Eyed" tease during "Other One"

Tickets for "The Dead's Summer Getaway" are on sale now, by the way. Very cool info all about it on DeadNet. Looks like we're going to Milwakee for the SummerFest show, though there's another show somewhere in NW WI that might be a much nicer outdoor venue.

enough...

If you use their equipment you are exactly right. As I have done many times, if you bring down your muskie equipment, including your hook sharpener, the results and enjoyment factor go up exponentially!

Hey Cornbread - Yes, you are correct, Dylan is on part of the summer tour, and Steve Winwood is on another part, and Willie Nelson is on yet another part. Again, Ratdog really sounded great; at the soundcheck I could tell that Bobby and the band were really into "getting it just right", and, the band actually started playing about 15 minutes before scheduled start time. (No warm up act.) It looked to me like they were very eager to do a great job. I bet the summer tour with "The Dead" will be similar in quality. Tickets are on sale now, and some shows are selling out.

By the way, the Ratdog parking lot was a trip - a micro scene of the old days. All our favorite and regular sub-cultural groups were represented, but downscaled by about 90%.

Steve - Your comments are right on target. I was scared to bring my stuff because I had just finished totally cleaning/lubing/upgrading all my reels and didn't want to expose them to the saltwater. Maybe next time, though.

By the way - I had a chance to check out the fishing section at the Clearwater WallyMart, what a fun shopping trip. They carry all kinds of gear designed for saltwater fishing, and most of that stuff is appropriate for musky fishing, too. I bought some single starnd leader wire, sexcellent "Spro" swivels, a variety of heavy duty mustad hooks, and a couple wild 3-4 oz leadhead jigs with hand-tied maraboo tails. I noticed that there were very few crankbaits, creatures and such; most of the saltwater fisning appears to be done with live bait.

Hey Ranger. You should have fished the flats. Just you and a guide catching Baracudda, Permit, snook, Tarpon {when there in the area} No big waves busy decks and weak fish. I cought a #20 permit on light tackle. It was one of the best fishing experiances I ever had. I also cought a ton of small baracuddas. Like pike that can jusp twice as high and hit like a bullet. Plus on the flats you get to csat all day.

Yes dude, the party boat experience must be "experienced" by everyone at least one time; almost makes you want to quit fishing eh?;) Had a buddy that used to work on one, and he had some wild tales about getting puked on, peeps hanging up on the wrecks etc. If you are food fishing and the fish are there, you can fill the cooler, but otherwise, what you just described is pretty much the order of the day! Offshore trips have gotten REAL expensive, but worth it if you get into the fish. At least you had the chance to get away from the cold and head south for some sun/fun!:O

I was on on trip like yours only in North Caralina. They overbooked the boat and started passing out rods, I told to deckhand I didn't get a rod & reel yet. He said to wait I'll have one. Sure enough by the time we got to the first wreck about 10 people were boat sick and I got their gear. I fished with a electric reel (the kind for handicapped folks) and found whenever I held it on the handrail I could shock people beside me. The trip is a ripoff but I got my money's worth. muskiebaron
