Replacing all of my batteries this spring, not sure what to get for my cranking/accessories/electronics battery...agm, deep cycle, stick with the cranking battery? I'm usually running two HDS8's w structure scan and sometimes the stereo is on. Will probably go with interstates and they have some new batteries out like the ECL, so now I'm more confused than ever. Thanks in advance

Also, I am planning on replacing my Napa group 27's with Interstate group 29 deep cycles for my 36 v Fortrex...any thoughts here or good to go?

Interstates 27MXHD works great as a starting battery and has the capacity to power all your extras. If you have room for the SRM29 or PRO-29M, go for it, if not the SRM27 or the PRO-27M are good choices too.

Had issues with my starting battery draining down by the end of the day when I bough my boat. Switched to the biggest Optima blue top I could fit and have never had an issue since!

If you run an AGM for your starter but stick with lead acids for your deep cycle you'll need separate chargers, that is if you currently have a 3 bank onboard charger.

some chargers have no issues charging different types of batteries, FYI

Not sure where propster got his info. I'm not saying he is wrong, but... I have a 3 bank Dual Pro charger with 2 deep cycle AGM's and one conventional lead acid starting batt. It works just fine for 3 years now. AGM batteries are lead acid just packed in fiberglass matting.

If its 3 bank, the two in parallel will be on the trolling motor and your starting battery will be separate. the charger will automatically adjust.

So my dual pro 4 bank will or won't work for an AGM as a starting battery if my TM batts are regular lead acid? Now I'm really confused

Any good quality modern battery charger will be able to detect and charge different types of batteries (flooded-cell or AGM, deep-cycle or starting) properly on each of its separate banks. I've had a two-bank charger (Marinco Guest 10/10) charging one AGM and one flooded-cell, and both batteries are over 5 years old now and both are still in good shape.

My bad. I must have misunderstood what I was told at the time I was considering doing the same. Is it possible the age of my charger was the problem? It's 20 yrs old.

As said new chargers should have no problems but there is another thing to look into. at a Yamaha sales seminar this winter their vp said their alternators will not charge AGM batteries. I assume that he meant not totally charge and I have not found out about other motor brands but its probably the same across the board. If you do have enough banks on your charger no problem but don't forget to plug in. Ive got a 2 bank so im sticking to lead acid even tho I run an Etec, better safe than sorry with all the electronics running off the starting battery. Bill
