I put together a video of last years annual trip that I make to the Florida Keys in March with a bunch of college friends, for what is now coming on 7 years straight... Hope ya like the video.
We have have guys using all sorts of tackle, from inexpensive catfish setups, to truly huge penn senator reels with heavy glass rods, however, the majority of the fish i catch and that many people catch are with muskie gear. Just wanted to share this, cause for a lot of people the saltwater world seems pretty intimidating and that it'd require all sorts of specialized gear, but it really doesn't need to be that complicated. I've caught a majority of my sharks on an abu garcia 7000 reel, and my calcutta 400 and a MH/H power muskie rod.
For cuda, in my experience, nothing is better than a high speed low profile reel, and burning rapala subwalks. Every muskie angler should experience sight casting and burning baits for cuda, and the fight is on a whole different planet compared to muskie.
I've jumped a number of tarpon with mh/h muskie rods and my curado 300 and lexa 400. I cast lots of swim baits and jerk baits for them and also live baits. I've even had tarpon swing hard at my soft plastic jerk baits while making an L turn, about to go into a figure 8 at the boat like i would for muskie!! With a map of the keys, any experienced freshwater angler can pick out reasonable spots to start. basically flats that extend out into areas nearby deep channels are good places to start. From there using your eyes to scout the flats looking for fish is all you need if the fish are shallow, and if the fish are on a break line, you'd fish it very similar to casting a break line for muskies. Similar to WI style sucker behind the boat, and casting off the bow, is pretty much the method I used 50% of the time or more, except instead of suckers i'm using live pin fish or mullet and lure selection is somewhat different for sure.
The fist day I was ever out in the keys we had multiple cuda over 36" and multiple shark and saw about a 14' hammerhead. experiences like this are very awesome, and can be done on ones own with a simple jon boat, canoe, kayak, or if you don't plan to run super shallow, you aren't gonna wreck a regular old lund or alumacraft, and they'd make for good channel/bridge fishing boats.
i hope to put together a youtube video someday on DIY saltwater flats angling. Getting to experience saltwater fishing at least once in a persons lifetime is definitely something i'd recommend, and one can do it on their own and have a great experience much more easily than most would probably expect!

Kayak fishing is so popular now but I'll take a canoe any day. My legs don't fall asleep and your mate can paddle you around when you hook up.
Great adventures right there! | |

| From my decent amount of saltwater experience, you are nuts to bring even those little sharks, (much less those fish over 3 feet) that close to your body parts! Makes for good video entertainment, but scary from a safety perspective. But that looks like an awesome trip and you guys have a blast!

| thanks everyone! and yeah, while i would recommend giving the saltwater flats a try, i wouldn't encourage people to get quite that at up close and personal with the sharks as we have... in a couple weeks i'll be on my 7th trip down there, and we've been fortunate that everyones been safe and had a great time | |
