Location: Wisconsin | I have spoken to a number of people about this, both DNR, the lake association, and Fisherman, but there is a lake in Oneida County that we have considered doing stocking for through private money.
The DNR has maxed out the amount of money they can allocate toward stocking this particular lake, and they have are considering allowing private stocking to occur, under one condition: only upper wisconsin river strain musky are allowed to be stocked.
I have been trying to conduct research on the most affordable fingerlings, but the number of fish hatcheries that I can find have been scarce. Does anyone know of any hatcheries that carry these fingerlings @ a good price? DNR has their opinions, but I have found a few just a bit cheaper... Thanks |

| I love this idea and obviously stocking efforts by the DNR have not been up to par in Northern Wisconsin. But, in my opinion, a total waste of time and money until the spearing issue is addressed. Whichever lakes you decide to stock will be speared out as soon as word gets out that people are catching muskies again. I would love to bring the fishery back to where it was in the 70's, 80's and even 90's. #*#*, if there was a puddle in the middle of Hwy 70, Art Oehmcke would stock it with muskies! Those were the days! When there used to be 11 bait shops along hwy 51 going from the minocqua bridge up to hwy 70 east and they were all making a living, now there is only 1... What does that tell ya? Unfortunately other things need to change before that can all happen and it looks like things aren't going to change any time soon. |

| I'm not saying that there are no muskies left, I'm saying is that things aren't what they used to be and there are many things that I feel should be changed. I think if you were to talk to most who were around during the time of good musky fishing in Northern Wisconsin that they would agree that something needs to be done.

On the stocking issue - Why not work together with the state , who have the hatcheries, to raise moneys in order to raise the muskies and minnows for them? I am sure you have quite the following out there for muskie support compared to what we have out here in the East. Things do not happen over night either...these efforts take proper time, planning and commitment from many. It shouldn't be too hard in your region with the history out there.

| Yes, let's go back to the 70's and 80's when catching a 29 incher was considered a great trip -- and then putting it in the frying pan. The fact that you say fishing was better back then as compared to now is laughable. |

| WiscoMusky if you need money for this you should REALLY Check out the Hugh Becker fund. Your project seems to fit their criteria and they have to give out yearly grants for muskie projects. You might be too late for 2015 but could get in on next year. |

The treaties between our government and the Tribe's governments creating the ceded territories see to it Native American spearing won't ever be 'banned'. They have the RIGHT to fish, and the rest of us have the 'privilege'. Federal law, and not debatable, so we won't....again and again and again...to infinity.
If the Tribes wanted, they could harvest enough fish to drive our bag limits to zero. They choose not to do that, but every time we raise hell or the State tries to mess with them a bit, activists make sure pictures end up on Facebook or worse, like announcing they will spear the entire TAC quota.
In fact, (thank goodness for forward thinking) we see unprecedented cooperation these days in fisheries management here in WI which is a HUGE move forward.
Also, before making any comments, one needs to look into what is funded by GLIFWC in this state. |

| Granted, I was pretty young in the 70's, but from what I remember the fishing in WI was nowhere near as good as it is today. The eating was a lot better, and there was a wider variety of fish to eat because nobody paid any attention to the laws. But the catching part was not so great... |

Location: Wisconsin | Thanks Happy Hooker, never heard of the fund. The I do have quotes for fingerlings from 2 different hatcheries, and they are similar, just both very expensive. The money has been raised to stock approx 450 this year, and it looks like we will have enough for another 450 next year. Hopefully everything goes through smoothly. |
