Thinking about buying a medium heavy rod, and was wondering what others use a mh rod for? I'm thinking for small bucktails and rattle baits and smaller cranks it would be good.

I use a ti mh 9' as my spring downsizing rod to throw what you mentioned. Would not throw anything above 8's with it and 6" cranks. Great for small spinnerbaits as well.

IF you can swing it, the Legend Top N' Tail is a phenomenal rod for smaller baits. I use it for smaller bucktails and smaller cranks and it loads up nice with smaller stuff and still has plenty of power. It's rated for 3/4-oz to 3-oz lures.

The Tackle Industries (TI) rod sweet spot for lure weights is 1-4oz. It can throw lures in the 0.5oz up to 8oz range very well but the sweet spot is 1-4oz. If you have the opportunity to go to a Tony Grant speech he has the rods in hand and can show you a lot!!

Check out Tuscarora Tackle too. Great rod maker!!! He also has TI blanks.

I started out musky fishing using a St croix 8 foot heavy.that was 17 years ago. So I'm still learning. Now all my rods are Thorn Bros custom rods I tell lonie what I want the rod for and he builds it. If you can afford it have custom rod built . once you fish with a custom rod you won't want to fish with anything else.
