Sucker fishing and Minnesota?

Does anyone do that over there?

If so how do you do that with the one rod per person law.

Do you also have to add a spinner to make the quickset rig a lure?

Just wondering[;)]

Jason,

In my opinion sucker fishing in MN is very minimal. alot of hard core fisherman that I know frown upon it and it is tough because we are allowed only one line. Bringing a youngster along is a great idea but be sure to bring the game boy as well. I personally do not sucker fish but have done some research of my own on Non-muskie waters with quick set rigs and circle hooks and Pike.

The only way to do hear in MN is to get tons of beers, anchor and fall asleep, and listen for the clicker alarm. Boring as all get out.

Hi Jason.......sucker fishing just isn''t very popular in Minnesota.
The DNR makes it clear, that they
do not favor live bait fishing for
muskie....I for one never use that
presentation....I believe it kills fish, and the studies are there to prove it. As long as it''s leagal.....I guess some anglers will use them, and I believe that it is their right to do so.

I don't sucker fish, probably because of the one line rule and find it boring. You can make a quick strike rig legal by adding a spinner, thus making it a lure. Some folks use the very small spinner that comes with a Swedish Pimple.

Good luck, Murph!

Boring!!!

I find it real hard to find it boring, mostly because I can cast too here in Wisconsin. But even then when its 15 degrees out, I put my hands in my pockets listen for the clickers.

Not too much diffect then trolling, except a slower approach as you cruse the breaks with the trolling motor.

As far as the hook set.... I find it tons of fun.. Kinda like jig and pig fishing for bass, you know its there, then you pounce on him. Plus you get fish that you would not have normally got. I know there has been some good fish popped on Leech doing this.

The new quick set rigs today are much better then the past and less damage is done, even less then a suick or a Jake does casting for that matter. Every one has railed a fish on a suick in the face and gills. That not good either. Quicksets catch in the mouth.

When I lived in MN years ago, it was a big NO NO to troll or use suckers.. I just wanted to see if things had changed.

I guess not.[]

I have minimal experience with using suckers. A lot of people dont do it around here because you cant get suckers longer than 10", unless you place an order, and that rarely works. I'd probably use them a little more often if I could get some larger ones on a consistent basis. Not sure if any baitshops in Walker carry jumbos.

I would not take it as cheating.. We all use worms to catch bluegills, but there are some artificals that work for them too.

Louis Spray caught his big fish on a sucker. Its my belief that if its legal, like trolling on Pewaukee lake, then its just one more option you have to use. Many folks say we are cheating down on Pewaukee because we can troll and most of the state cant. We are not cheating, we are just doing what the law permits in our area.

We have to quit fishing Nov 30th, is it wrong to think that in Minnesota, Michigan and other states out east they are cheating because they get to fish later for the big pigs. No I would be wrong if I thought that.

If you have not tried it, you should at least once. You might find a pattern that helps you get that fish of a lifetime, because if its legal, then why not try it.

My 2 cents on the sucker subject,

We can't even troll here in Northern Wisconsin as a result of tradition winning out over sound biological common sense, so I NEVER have used a sucker because of the way I work my rig in the Fall fishing a creature, my favorite Fall bait.

I have been thinking about what might have happened if I had a quick strike rig out while drifting over huge hooks on the breaks on Cass last weekend...[]

Hi,
I have sucker fished in MN on a few occasions. It certainly works, but the one line regulations kind of limit its appeal. In situations where it would be most efficient to sit in one spot (or cover an area slowly) with a sucker, something like a Bulldawg does the job about as well.

Another factor, which nobody's mentioned yet, is that it's pretty difficult in most areas to even get large suckers late in the fall.

On the other hand, what I have done with considerable success is use a large living rubber bass jig, with a 7 or 8 inch redtail chub. Fun to fish with late in the fall because it catches muskies, big walleyes, big largemouths and pike...

Steve, in answer to your question about Cass - if you'd dragged suckers, you would have made quite a few 22" pike pretty happy. Another issue with sucker fishing in MN - pike chew up suckers a lot...

Cheers,
RK

Great point RK with the pike...

MN has 10 times as many pike in the lake then Wisconsin, at least my opinion. That would get very expensive at $3 a crack for a good 12" to 14" sucker.

I know MN rivers have suckers in them, I used to catch them with I was a kid. But if the demand is not there, like in WI then I suppose that bait shops wont have them in stock.

Great points on this intersting subject. I really think things would be different here too if we had one line. Because the use of suckers is very limited in MN and Canada.
