Might make a great tiller for a 21' Muskie boat.

I'm old enough to remember when motors were $100 per horsepower and a green 25 Johnson Sea Horse was huge

1953 or 4 I water skied behind one but I was a lot lighter then.

Suppose I shouldn't be the one to mention this, but some guys right here in the the Milwaukee area (Germantown WI) have a company called Seven Marine where they are producing a 557 HP outboard that doesn't look all that much too different than Verado. I got a tour of the plant and it's really impressive. They were also well ahead of the G2 (Evinrude) option of letting you have it in any color scheme you like. I'm positive they are at the Florida show too. The dad (retired Merc engineer) and two sons who run it were my next door neighbors for a dozen years.

To bdog: I don't think a lot of these bigger motors are all that much heavier. Don't think the 557 is more than 100 lbs more than a 250 Verado. Also think the physical size of the 225,250 & 300 Verados are all in the same case. The 400 is likely bigger and heavier, but I'd bet not that much. As to transoms, my 620 Ranger is rated a 250 HP, but I totally believe you could hang two of them on there--no problem. With respect to HP, it's like I tell my wife, "you can't tell from size."

It's light. Only 668# pounds, 20ish heavier than the current 300. Seven introduced a 627hp outboard yesterday but the Mercury should challenge them with weight ratio.

A 39' center console set up for fishing with 4 of the new 400r engines ran 97mph in testing. There's another boat rigged with 5 of them but numbers aren't out yet.

Who would ever need an emergency way to start their motor, Sled? Although, I do feel like I saw some fools out on V this November in the dark that looked like they weren't able to start their motor...

Good times...good times.

I can see the 400, but what the heck they loose the black paint? that thing would look like you had a refrigerator on the back of your boat.

99% of the sales will be to the saltwater market.. its black that looks odd on those boats IMO ..

Black would show the weathering, common to all southern/saltwater rigs, more quickly than a light color.

Do you think the lower horsepower Mercs that have traditionally been all black will ever offer other color options - white, custom, etc ??

They also released a 350 that will be more in relevant in our world. The 350 is built off of the same 2.6l verado block as the others. The 400r is a larger block. I doubt you will see a musky rig rated for the 400r but the 350 being from the same Verado platform will probably be available once the boat makers rate 21' boats for it. If I had to guess, Keith Kavajecz is doing everything he can to get one on his zv21

Agreed!! That has been Mercury's "look" for years. Ever since the Verado came out. Evinrude looks like a space ship.
