I've lost 2 fish recently thst I watched drill the lure pretty well on the 8 and lost both . To me it looks like the hooks are a tad small , anyone else having issues holding fish ? They are a really thick hook also , hard to sharpen .

Haven't hooked up on my mid yet, but I was thinking about upsizing the hooks. If you don't think they could keep a 50"er pinned, I'd swap em out.

Putting bigger hooks on the mid-size will only cause issues with the hooks tangling more with the tails & each other. I think the mid-size isn't worth having. The regular catches plenty of big & small musky.

The mids and minis are great tiger baits.

Last summer the first time I used the mid size, I lost what was probably my first 50"+ fish. Had it hooked up for a bit, lost at the boat. 10 min later, landed my PB 49.5" on the same lure. I did buy some new trebles for the mid's at the Chicago show, Chaos came out with them this year. I think they are a great size.

I upped the size of my hooks on my Mid's & Mini's and "T'd" them out and have no issue with either fouling or missing fish. I have also experimented with using a 7/0 solo on the mini and have had good results.

I had a good discussion with Rick at Muskie Max about hook sizes on Medussas. Durring the testing stages of the new Husky, their hooking percentage went through the roof when they switched from 7/0 down to 6/0. Lots of people want to upgrade to bigger hooks on rubber baits. This is counter productive IMO. Bigger hooks on a rubber bait are going to cause a lot of hook up on the outside of the mouth which isn't good. I personally would stick with the same size hooks. If you think they are not strong enough, check out the new chaos trident black hooks. They are sweet!

Ive lost quite a few on Mids. I always figured the fish get their teeth in the rubber before the hooks. So when you set the hooks you think you got it but the fish is still clamped down on the bait and the bait didnt move enough to drive the hooks in. Kinda sucks but I also get bit twice as much as any other bait.

I'm thinking the fish are not getting thru to hooks , they are grappling all those tails but not getting a lot of hook inside the mouth ?

Well I know for sure that happened once to me since two of the three tails were missing. Yes you really need to drive the hooks in hard if not double set them.

I agree with the double set. I think any of the larger rubber baits need two good hook sets.

If you sit with a hook file and take the time to sharpen them really good (perfect time now with all the snow and ice!)....you'll have no problem. Try to get that "harpoon" triangle look on that hook tip around the barbs.

I haven't had any issues, but I do as above and set the hook hard twice...

Hey there Dan---- I think I have a solution to your problem. First of all know this---- it doesn't matter how big your hooks are ---OR---- how sharp they are( they could be surgical needles for all intensive purposes) ----- sometimes fish just throw those darn things----- stuff happens, right? Now with that being said--- I started throwing my Medussas alittle more on LSC this season and did REALLY WELL in the process--- so believe me, I know where you're coming from. We were having "sharpening issues" until a friend of mine recommended using a Dremel (picked up a cordless model at Menards with a ton of sanding discs---pretty inexpensive)----- in order to turn our hooks into MUSKY CATCHING WEAPONS! Our hooks have never been sharper---- and our catch ratio did go UP somewhat-----which was NICE! I did however LOSE the biggest fish of MY year on a sharpened Pounder------ so we're still learning--- just like everybody else. Try a Dremel---- I'm sure you'll like the results---- the muskies won't---haha!----Pat

^ good advice. I used to think my hooks were sharp, until I started using a dremel.

I've found Medussas to be hard to hook up on the F8 if you're in the middle of a turn, because they turn on their side. Then, 9 out of 10 times, the fish eat the top of the lure with the hooks dangling outside its mouth.

Re the sharpening deal...recently I bought a handful of baits used, from a few diff. sellers and found each had "sharpened" their trebles a long way down towards the bend of each point.

Really? You know, you just need to attack the point - and maybe down a bit, ever so slightly.
I've seen this before, the points are filed waaay back down the shaft and this on pretty unused/unworn hooks.

Just hit those tips. It's just that tip of the point that gives the "prick"/stick...

-- With apologies to the O.P., I didn't mean to d-rail your topic.

I always see everyone using files to sharpen their hooks. I've never used one for hooks. I bought a small round diamond knife sharpener at Scheels for $9.99 that has a hook sharping groove in it. Works great. Also works good for sharpening darts that hit the cement and jack up the tip.

Had to read down a long ways before I found the guy who addressed the fact that the two fish you lost were on the figure 8. Jim pretty much nailed it. In my experience, rubber fish are tricky on the 8. Sometimes they eat it weird and, even when they eat it right, you don't always get the bait to travel the necessary distance with a short, boatside hookset. In my experience, setting the hooks mostly downward has been effective. Hope you didn't upgrade all your hooks to 10/0 already but that might work!
