Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | OK, now that I got your attention....
Here's my question: how much does the overall size of a lure matter? Think about it: a Bomber Long A Mag is 7"......and a HR/Cobbs Glider in the smaller size is about 6"+, but they are obviously NOT the same overall size. Thoughts?

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I have always felt the overall 'signaure' of the bait is as or more important than it's dimensions. Spinnerbaits and bucktails, for example, can have a very large signature in a fairly small sized bait. So can a surface bait. Gliders, on the other hand, are definitely dependant on size more than the aforementioned baits, and there, size matters, IMHO. | |

Location: Edina, MN | In heavily pressured clearer water I am looking for a reaction strike and in that case a smaller bait moved quickly gives fish less to think about. In dark water, both stained water and night fishing, I think a bigger target is easier to find and hit. Often it is important to match the hatch in terms of overall profile and size. Size does matter but which size to use depends upon the specific situation. | |

| Lol...surely Slamr, you must have known when you posted this!;) I think a narrower bait may enable a better hook up, but I lost a real nice fish awhile back on a 6" Storm Thunder Stick that tooth marks from one end to the other, so who knows. From the way the marks were on the bait, I'd say it had the back in its mouth, away from the hooks. Melon had a good idea as far as water displacement goes depending on water clarity. Since it's hard to judge the vibrations/wave lengths from a live baitfish, I'd guess that bait action would be a factor in clearer water. I do think baitfish also give off a scent when wounded, but since a musky supposedly can't smell that well, that shouldn't be a factor. JLong should tackle this before long! | |
