| Where does a guy go to talk/read about winter trout fishing? I get afflicted with that bug almost as bad as muskies, but not for the same length of time.
Thanks. |

we don't have an ice trout season that i know of in WI, but during spring ice LOL ... we fish whitefish in the hopes of catching incidental lakers. just started doing it a few years ago and it's an absolute hoot!!!
let me know if you find a good site. we just jig bottom in 70-85' of water with glow jigs tipped with wax worms and do pretty well. absolutely love that time of year on the ice with a sweatshirt. |

i fish trout lake near boulder jct. ... it's not too far from the house. we have some inland trout waters scattered about.
i wonder if "inland lake" is an acceptable term to use since the great lakes aren't oceans ... i'm sure the terminology police will be here soon to give a verdict.

| Come to the Milwaukee Harbor. Great brown trout fishing through the ice. And on a warm up, you can catch a trout on the ice, then launch a boat and catch one in open water. Automatic fishermen are popular, as is jigging. Spawn will work sometimes, sometimes it is spoons that work...while on the ice. |

definitely need to do that too ... seen so many great pictures! i've thought about the automatic fishermen here for ice pike. our laker jigging seems to find them at or near bottom and wanting a lot of action so it's a lot of jigging here.
what bait do you use with the automatic fisherman? |

Thanks. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX . If your near any of the Great Lakes you can find world class fishing the streams flowing into them. I caught two steel-head that ran out of a Lake Michigan both were 33"s long. I caught One in Jan. that was a stream fish that stayed in the river over the winter . The other one in April that had just ran out of the lake to spawn, one was caught on a spawn sack on a 9ft spinning rod with 4 lb test mono and the april one on a fly rod with a prince nymph had, to go to 8# test for that one. Allso almost all of the Great lakes have good ice fishing for trout. GO FISH. |

What's a typical day's catch? Assuming a guy has at least a few trips under his belt, and generally knows the ropes. A couple trout, one possibly big? a handful? ten? Or graph a handful, hopefully get one, but it'll probably be a beast? |

| jonnysled: I don't go down to the harbor often. I'm not much of an ice fisherman. But, I've been fortunate enough to host a few company outings with local guides down there. On those automatic fishermen, it is usually spawn. Sometimes a shiner. And oddly enough, one of the better spots to put automatic fishermen are right off of the piers in the marina. Something about a "runway" for the fish.
Again, not being an ice fishing expert, or a trout expert, this seems odd to me. But it does work. Those automatic fishermen are pretty cool. Loads up the rod and when the fish takes the bait, it sets the hook and it pulls drag until you get there.
If you want to open water fish, there is an easy to find warm water discharge area to try. Blade baits, twisters and spawn all work there. John G. does a show or two a year at "The Wall".
But really, the harbor is full of browns. You can find them almost anywhere. Piers, rocks, lagoon...etc. And some of those fish are just enormous. |

Location: Cave Run Lake KY. | WE always go there for opening day of musky fishing and I think the trout fishing was over by then. We would fish crow for 3 days and if the muskies had left the shallows we would go over to the other side of HY 71 and fish out of a boat launch on Stevens Bay and fish the north shore of Sabaskong for musky. the photos of the trout they caught looked like five#ers and up nice fish.

Location: Duluth, MN | Typical would be 15-30 a day between 3 guys. With a handful being 10 lbs plus on some of the lakes. Weve gotten them up to mid 20's but not every day. My best was 26.
Crow is the numbers lake with the average fish in the 3-6 lb class. Midd teens come out of there pretty often though.
PM me and I can give you some other lakes that are under the radar and hold giants.
Long rides on the sled though! |

A couple trout, one possibly big? a handful? ten? Not saying big fish can't be caught there, but I certainly don't expect them, 3-4 lb is the average fish and bigger fish seem to be caught on dead bait. I haven't been there in a few years but that's how I always remembered it. This is no guarantee and just like musky fishing it varies day to day throughout the season. Every day and every trip is different.
It's a great area whether you like to explore or just stick to fishing Crow. I think I've fished close to 10 different lakes while based out of Muskie Bay, but there is definitely good fishing on Crow itself with no real need to go elsewhere. A lot of people make the run to Rowan which is about 20 miles to the lake one way. I've stayed at Muskie Bay many times... they are great people, and it's a well run winter resort... not many places open for the ice season up there. |

Over the years I've found that fishing on the ice doesn't do much for me. I need to cast. So I don't get to the harbor too much anymore. But when I do, there is usually an excellent guide taking care of us.
Recently, though, my company hired a new person who is a big steelhead fisherman. And I love to steelhead fish. I only know one of two good spots and they are very much community spots, but now this guy is going to show me more spots and how to correctly go after those fish. I can't wait for that! |

Big Green, Lake Geneva, & Big Cedar are lakes open to legal lake trout fishing in the winter - and it's a blast!
Devils Lake in Sauk Co. also has an open season for brown trout through the ice. Never tried this, but folks do quite well. Not much for size though.
