I've spooked following fish with my shadow and we've all seen them bolt when they look up at us and or the boat. I see most guys trying to blend in with green, browns, camo clothing, etc... and some with blue/white sky colors. I've followed the cam or blue patterns for the most part and do OK with putting fish in the net. However, I see Jim Saric in RED all the time and he sure catches more muskies than I do.

Do the colors of your cloths/outerwear matter?

Jim Saric fishes more than you in better locations with guides.
Movement and noise are more important than color. Be subtle and smooth when you go into your figure 8, don't lean too far over the gunnel, be quiet.

I think it matters, just not that much. I tend to wear light colors when the sun is out, whites, faded blues...etc. Then darker colors when it is cloudly, greens, blacks...etc.

I think that how you fish (as stated above) matters more. Understand how to go into the 8 smoothly, how to keep the figure 8 deep in the water, away from the boat.

To me, things like weather, moon phase, bait presentation and boat control are much more important than the color of your shirt.

Right at this particular moment, there are only two colors that matter and should be worn at all times Green and Gold Baby....Go Packers!

I think they are seeing your eyes, perhaps blue or more camo type of contact lenses might help up your success.

I don't think it matters all that much however when I'm in a small river in a jon boat I wear earth tones it cant hurt.If I go out on my home lake for a few hours whatever I was wearing during the day. In Nov. on the Larry I wear a red float suit.

Light blue shirt with a cloud patttern for sunny days, gray shirt for cloudy days, camo for narrow rivers, tan for stained water, white if it's snowing. I also have a brown shirt for #*#*ty days.

I wear lighter blues on sunny days and darker clothing on cloudy days. Not sure if matters really, but it does in my head so that's what I go with!

Smooth translation into the 8 is good advice too.

IMO I really think it matters especially if the water is clear. Last spring I was guiding 2 guys one was wearing a bright orange sweatshirt the other a light grey one.
I had them burning rabbid squirrels and most of the fish were hitting at the boat on the turn or in the 8. The guy in the grey sweatshirt caught 3 the guy in orange 0, he had them come in hot but turn away 5 feet or more away from boat.
Another trip it was raining, one client was wearing yellow rain gear the other was grey. We were throwing top water
The fish were coming in hot on the guy in yellows baits and turning off very fast before they got to boat and the guy in grey got boat side hits.
Have seen it a few other times also.
On my website where it lists what to bring, I recommend for people not to wear bright red, yellow or orange.
No matter what color you are wearing if you make fast or jerky movements at the boat you will spook fish.
Good Luck,
Jeff Hanson

I don't separate the blues from greens on different days but I try to avoid wearing bright, unnatural colors. Does it make a difference, I don't know but it might and it sure as heck is not going to hurt.

I like to color coordinate my clothes with my boat. That way if the fish don't bite at least we still look good!
If you figure 8 next to the boat, maybe the color of the boat is more important then the shirt you are wearing. I fish out of a red/white Ranger and get a ton of boatside fish annually on a clear water lake. A proper figure 8 is more important then the clothes you wear in my opinion. Just my 2cents.

I've got some bright safety green hoodies with my contracting logo on em and a blaze orange musky shop hoodie that I wear on the water a lot, one of my buddy hates em and says I should wear neutral colors and I'm scaring the fish away.To a few finicky fish and probly a few more finicky ppl it might matter, but Imo i don't think that much. I've caught em wearing bright colors and on multiple figure 8s in very clear water. I wear the bright stuff so dimwitted ppl in other watercrafts or maybe a chance they'll be able to find me easier if I fall outa the boat.

I remember watching a muskie show (Musky Hunter?) where they talked about this and even took some underwater video looking back up into a boat with two people standing side-to-side wearing different colors. Shirts with light neutral colors (gray, tan, etc) were much less visible against the sky (which is in the background from a muskie's eye view) than dark or bright colors. Might have an effect in F8 situations...

Key thoughs after reading this post:
-I'm guessing Pointer got the joke
-Jerky movements DO scare fish off
-I'm not sure if color matters much. I usually don't wear "loud" colors mostly because that isn't my style so can't compare bright colors.
-I have caught fish in the 8 wearing my red rain gear, but it's a somewhat muted red
-In my opinion, some fish will dart off no matter what. They CAN see you no matter what color you wear, and you ARE moving during the 8, no matter how smooth you are.

I have always taken the advice of salt water flats fishermen and tried to match the skyline behind me. I know it's not always possible, but I keep it in mind and don't wear chartreuse or orange or black. I think that fish that are locked on to the lure, such as those that will stick around and hit on a figure 8, would hit if you were wearing pink and purple paisley.

One day fishing with a guide, I had a red rain suit on and had three fish turn away at the boat (he busted on me looking like a large tomato). The next time out with this guide, I had on a black rain suit and caught my first musky over 50 inches at the side of the boat. I don't know if it matters or not, but to me, that red rain suit will never see the light of day when musky fishing again.

I actually have started angling my boat slightly away from shore so the nose points out. Then when you reel in your lure is not coming straight into the boat. About a 45 degree angle works well. The fish doesn't see something blocking his way and it makes it much easier to get into a figure 8.
