Location: Michigan | I have found that when I can get a wabull to run up/down vs. left/right in the water column it seems to trigger noticeably more strikes. However, I cannot get all wabulls to run this way, I am sure due to properties of the individual blanks.
That said, are there any other jerkbaits that you can get to move up and down? The wabulls I have that run the best will glide vertically 2-3 feet in each direction... I own TONS of other glidebaits, and have bought/sold 10 times that many, but none of them glide vertically in the water column like select wabulls.
Any others out there worth a try? |

Location: Waukee, IA | Have you tried putting a small fish tail on the back of a hellhound? I get real nice vertical movement with that and it gives a real nice pause as well. |

| I'm not sure of the action of a Wabull but the Raptor jerkbait might have the action you are looking for. I only got to use it in sub-freezing temps on my last trip for an hour or two but it seemed like it had some up and down action. If I remember correctly it was similar to a dive and rise but neutrally buoyant so it didn't rise much at all. There's a nice video of it somewhere. |

| haven't made one of these in over a year. Not sure what type of lure catagory it falls into but i made it to go up and down in the water column. The quad prop spins on the rise and fall. simple stop and go reeling or twitching to bounce it up/down.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Changing the angle of the line tie (both x and y) will change the action of a Wabull dramatically. Reef Hawgs and Jerkos are similar "un-gliders". |

Location: Michigan | Will, you are always thinking out of the box... You mean you can bend those things?  This is the problem binary thinkers (me) have. It either works, or doesn't... Can you provide any insight on how/which way to bend to create more up/down? |

Location: Michigan | To the rest of you guys, thanks for the comments. I want a hard bait (squirrelly tail is fine) that is medium-medium fast sinker that when worked will run 3-5 feet below the surface that you can get to rise and dive 18-24" each way. |

Location: North St. Paul, MN | That much dive and rise, seems a hardhead would be your best bet? I would second the 8" or bigger Raptor for a little more subtle dive and rise action...softail or hard body. |

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | Not sure why I'm feeling so generous with "tips" lately. Twist and bend can both change the action. For what you want twisting should get you the correct action since you want the tow eye to fight against the normal horizontal balance point. 10 degrees usually makes a big difference in vertical movement. Weighting makes a big difference too and just because they have the same out of the water balance point doesn't mean they'll behave the same in the water (what make wood baits awesome also makes them suck). Generally a bait of this type will have the most lateral and vertical action if it's a little heavy in the tail but it will also be harder to control when you want the action subtle. |

Location: Michigan | Thanks Willbur... I'll have to try that in 6 months... To the rest of the gang, again I appreciate the suggestions. Let me try to clarify a little more. I don't want a pull bait or a dive & rise, essentially I bait like a Hang 10 Manta, except that runs 5 feet down and when you jerk it, it glides vertically in the water column, not horizontally. Some of my wabulls do it when worked correctly. I will have to play around with the line ties on the rest of my wabulls, and also play with reef hawgs a bit more. Raptor looks cool, but not focused on dive and rise. |

Location: Norway | I find many gliders go up and down when I snap the rod harder, and less slack line compared to when I want to side to sde. Even phantoms, but if I really want that action I snap on a Jerko or sometimes a wabull.
