| What are everyones favorite rod and reel combos? I am looking to get another rod and reel and am not sure which way to go. I use a lot of jerk baits and all sizes of buck tails, as well as topwaters. I was thinking about getting "the jerk" from st Croix. What would be a good reel to use with that? Also, could that rod be used for small buck tails and topwaters also? Thanks for any info!!! |

Location: New Jersey | I have The Jerk and I really like it. I prefer having a smaller low-profile reel that takes up a lot of line on my jerkbait rod. I used to have the Curado 300EJ but now I have the high speed NaCl and like it a lot better. Probably not the best rod for small bucktails and topwaters. It has a pretty stiff tip. I use the Top N Tail for smaller bucktails, smaller cranks and smaller prop-style topwaters. |

Location: South-Central PA | What he said! The jerk with an NaCL or Toro HS is a great combo for jerks and gliders or even big WTD topwaters. It's not a good rod for small bucktails or small topwaters. You'll have a very hard time getting it to load.
I doubt you'll find a rod that will be suitable for both jerks and light bucktails- they require completely different powers and actions. Do you currently have a rod that will fill one of these needs? If so, get a new rod to fill the other.

| I use a Big Dawg with a NACL 60.5.4 for rubber and big tails and a Sling Blade with a NACL 50 6.4 for everything else. |

| Recently picked up a slingblade, put a NACL 50 5.4 on it, played around a bit with it, throws small/big blades great. Suick, weagle, cranks, it worked great for as well. Wanted a do it all rod and this fits the bill outside of pounders. I like a bit longer rod for jerks as well, so this fit me. |

| I like my 9'3" TP extra heavy, with a 400 te, for blades and rubber.
I like my 8' 9" TP extra heavy, with a 400 te, for topwater and cranks. |

| Also, I have thought about going with the big nasty from st croix for an all around rod..it comes in a heavy, but would that rod be alright for anything from bucktails to dawgs? |

Location: Smith Creek | Yes, the Big Nasty can do bucktails to rubber very well.
The TMU79HMF is a pretty nice rod for both jerk baits and bucktails too. |

| The Lexa is a big heavy reel and the curado is tiny in comparison. I have an addiction to trying stuff out. I have had a curado, nacl, both lexa 300 & 400 and a tranx this year.. IMO the nacls are the nicest all around reels but do lack the line pick up of tranx for burning tails and picking up slack when ripping rubber. |

Nasty is good down to about 1-1.5 oz. |

| i would go with the lexa, I have a curado 301 love the reel but had had issues with the weak drag system and losing a considerable number of fish this past season. I would recommend something with a heavier drag for jerkbaits. The revos and lexas will give you the heavier drags as well as the new okumas though I have not used that reel.
I have the exact setup you mentioned: big nasty with a calcutta 401D. Love that setup and I also love that rod paired with the revo 61. That rod will just about do it all and do it very well. I like using this rod with jerkbaits a lot as well. |

Location: Minnesota | I have been fishing muskies for around 15 years. And have 12 set ups from a 6 foot rod I call stubby ( great for walk the dog ) to a 9'8" predator for pounders . It comes down to how you like to fish. What works for me don't work for other's . Buy what works for you |

Location: deephaven mn | Jerk bait rods can really very, some folks like lite tips to feel the bait some like xh, some folks like 6'9
others are using 8'-6'' lengths for jerk baits' i think you need to try fishing with some different ones and find the one that feels best to you |
