Ok...got great responses from my other Thorne Bros Predator thread. This time I'm going to be getting a XXH for myself and a MH for my brother in law. My rod will be used for all heavy stuff (big rubber, big cranks) and his rod will be used for smaller stuff (bucktails, spinnerbaits, small minnow baits). We both have XH Predators already.

The main questions I have for both is what would be your ideal length for each?

As of right now I would probably somewhere between 8'6-9'0 for both but not sure.

Thanks for all responses!

I have The St.Croix Big Dawg (8'6 XH) and Big Nasty(9'0H) and I find myself liking the longer rods more and more. If you have the capacity to safely store and travel with a 9footer I don't see any disadvantages with going for a rod on the longer end of the spectrum.

Rod length is definitely something that you need to be comfortable with. One person will say 8' is plenty long where I'm going to say 9'8" (or longer) is best. Same goes with the handle length, it's what you feels right to you. If your last Predators you had done works good for you and feel good than go with that set up. That's the nice thing with having them make your rods, you get what YOU want!!

The XXH should be great for the real heavy stuff.

The MH is a great small bucktail, topwater, small glidebait rod but I do not like it for small twitchbaits. It has a real soft tip and you can't get much of a "snap" to get the bait to dance around. Taking a few inches off the tip would help alot. I have both the MH and Heavy Pred's with nothing cut off the tip's and for twitchbaits up to 7's I prefer the heavy over the MH hands down! Bigger twitchbaits I go to a Big Nasty or the XH Pred.
Just my 2 cents, have fun!

So for my Bro in Law's rod do you think the better option is going with a Heavy instead of the Medium-Heavy? Is the heavy really close to an XH? I feel that the XXH is definitely what I want but for him I am a bit worried it will be too light.

I would recommend the H for your bro-in-law. It should load nicely with the baits you listed. It's not at all like the XH and I think it would work well for him.

I have 3 the H, XH, and the XXH . The XXH is all most to heavy. I didn't even use it last year. My XH worked great for pounders. Unless your going to be tossing 2 pounders. Talk with lonie he. Can help you choose the right rods. As for lengths that comes down to personal preference. My XH and XXH are 9 foot 8 inch it's what I like buy what you like

I think we chatted on your last post. I have 5 Preds including a XXH. The XXH is a niche rod and shines with two pounders and is actually a dynatime supermodel rod as well a s a great tool for ripping 14 i nch Jakes and other like baits. Mine is 9'2 split grip. The XH is the best Pounder rod out there IMHO. My MH Pred is a stock 9 footer. For what you are looking to use it for I think that would be fine or you could take a n inch of the top if you want a little more "Pop" inthe tip...

I have a 9' with an 18" handle for 2-pounders and a 7'6" with an 18" handle for ripping big cranks and giant glide baits. The rationale being the large rubber loads up the longer rod better, and I can work the heavy cranks and glide baits better with a short rod. Just personal preferences. I do really like the XXH blank, though, for both presentations.
