| I lost 3, and then came home and lost 2 daggone nice rockfish, one at least a 25lber on the TRAP! I know a bunch were caught on them; I'd say at least 25, if not more... |

Location: NeverNever Lake | I got my 39 1/2 in the last hour on Saturday. Never got a nibble till I put on a firetiger(1 3/4 oz on my digital scale) Trapp. I didn't really know what to do when the fish approached to boat, as I have been netting my own fish as long as I can remember........
Thanks Artie for the great net job !!!!

| So far count would be 13 caught, 6 lost, and Sworrall what exactly does "missed a few" mean? We went 2 for 2 with traps the day we fished. I am curious as to what kind of ratio goes on with these things. I swore mostly off them after dropping 3 fish total, and 2 nices ones, the same day, spring before last. |

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Missed a few means exactly that. I had hits from muskies I saw that I didn't get stuck, three, I think. I usually don't have any problem sticking fish on traps, but did that day for some reason. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I boated 6 muskies on traps, one on a Undertaker. I lost one muskie at the boat on a trap and one other that I had on for a few seconds, thats 6 of 8, not bad for spring time. |

Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | In my opinion alot of "missed" fish may have actually been the Rattle Traps hitting branches, stumps, the bouncing the bottom, etc...
I saw several people running traps in the back of Warix, Buck, etc. in about 2 feet of water, when the trap hit a stick or branch, they would set the hook and say, "One just hit my Trap" But in all reality it was a stick/branch.
I would say the Traps have about the best hooking percentages of any bait I have thrown. 9 times out of 10 these fish NAIL these thing.
Not trying to rag on anybody, but I did see alot of so called missed fish that I know was a stick or bottom.

| All mine were "certified", live, wiggling viewable pisces(3). BUT---I know what Mike is talking about; I hung a daggone pine branch in Scotts Creek that put up a whale of a battle 'til I got her turned...then she rolled over and gave up! W/ the h20 stained as it was, and as much wood as there is in that lake, I too have wondered as to what is what. I usually don't classify a fish unless I can actually "feel" the fish nail the bait; most always a limb won't "attack" the bait, although I wonder about that too at times. I have had them nip the bait on a roll, therefore I need to come to a decision as to exactly what constitutes a "lost fish", a "hit", then sit down and calculate the possibilities of limbage in the area being fished. Most likely my findings will be based on clarity of water, actual amount of woodage w/in the area being angled, and bait scrutiny pertaining to any wood particles, scales etc. before making a final determination as to what transpired from the time me bait entered the water, to the time it completes a figure 8 or large J or circle. Now I must rest_________________ |

I missed several of those mysterious strikes. Had a big one all the way to the boat before it changed into a 6” log. All those extra hits made for good fun.
Seriously though, I had a 29 and a 39 and Jason had another short one in the boat Friday. I had a positive ID on a missed strike from a fish in the high 30’s or low 40’s Saturday. I went back last Saturday and picked up a 28. All of my fish were on the same 1 oz. chartreuse trap.

Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | Out of my boat (and Tony's on the first day) we had six trap fish. Troyz lost one on a trap but Tony was kind enough to latch on to it about two casts later so Troy could at least see it (38.5). So I guess we were 6 outta seven for nifty .857 batting average.
The sledge on the other hand was a nifty three for three with a 36 and a 39.5 to its credit. Batting 1.000 with the banana.
Yes we have your bananas, we have your bananas today. |

| A few years back we fished a lot of traps for Bass. The Bass seemed to be able to thrown them more often than other crank baits. At that time they came out with a Pro Trap that had a breakaway hook. If I remember correctly the line ran throuh the bait and had a treble on the back that would hook the fish and the lure itself would slide up your line. Has anyone ever seen one like this in Musky size? It should not be too difficult to make? |

| Rockfish will throw them too, especially if they get 1/2" of slack line; usually seems to happen if they turn toward you suddenly. I got an old Heddon King Basser that when hit, allows the bait to swing free from the hooks. I think Mark Gotisha mentioned the Trap you spoke of. Count yourself fortunate if you rarely loose fish for sure! |

Location: Rhinelander. | Really surprises to hear so many lost on traps. This is usually such a sure hookup. Wondering if those who had great sucess use different hooks then those that come on the bait. Seems like like something is up here. I for one use the regular hooks and seldom lose a trap fish. Sorry to hear about all that bad luck.

| Here's a tad bit of history...Billy Burns, a guide for Crashes Landing at Cave Run, fishes bass too, and figured out that 'skis will nail a Trap, made by Bill Lewis, and then proceeded to fish them in the spring time, altering and modifying the bait as he saw fit. I have used them for quite some time for rockfish in both salt/fresh water, and also catch a # of large and smallmouth bass on them. Some folks exchange the hooks and put on #4 Gamugatchi(sp?) hooks, and use a light 7 strand leader or flourocarbon leader. Peeps throw from 1/2 oz. to a full ounce Trap in a variety of colors, most often in very shallow water; flats, points, etc., during certain times in the spring as the 'skis move shallow. For rockfish, points, flats and bars should be cast to as well as suspended fish around shad. Every color has its day, and when the baits are cast shallow for 'skis, they are retrieved at a high rate of speed; when you bump bottom, jerk the bait up quickly and continue to reel. About all I know to tell you. *Some do use bass gear for Trap fishing also... |
