Hey,
Ive been pouring my own dawg style baits recently and i keep getting an uneven surface on the baits. Like little bumps all over the place. Im pouring them in molds made with alumilite purple 128 i believe it is. Any idea how to get rid of the bumps when pouring them?
Thanks a lot,
Bryant

Is it bubble bumps? Can you post a picture of the bumps

Bubble bumps? Ive heated the plastic through and through trying to get rid of them to no avail. Heres a coule pics... Im not overly concerned with getting rid of them but figured there has to be a way. You can see the uneven surface throughout the bait. It really is only a cosmetic thing and i know the fish dont care.

Those dimples are not caused by air bubbles. Those are caused by the silicone mold expanding from the hot plastic. Usually takes a couple pours to get the silicone warmed up to make the surface smooth. Try making a couple pours with scrap plastic, to heat up your mold, before pouring with the insert.
I've seen guys actually heat their mold in a microwave before pouring. Personally I've never done that so I cannot recommend it.
Good luck.

I thought that was the plastic when it cools it contracts that causes that. Let us know if getting the molds hot helps with that

I would guess that it's your mold that is causing the dimples. Over heating plastic is NOT a good thing.

Who's plastic products are you using? There are some real good ones, and some that are suspect.

Also, I tend to like my molds on the cool side. Can pour a larger amount in a shorter amount of time. Also curEs quicker on a cool mold.

These are bigger than pounders... The plastic takes a long time to cool to the point where i feel safe removing it from the mold. Afterwards the mold is good and hot, I'm assuming the second one poured right then would be nice and smooth but I've just been doing them one at a time. Ive had it feel like the plastic in the middle is still liquid when i took the bait out of the mold too quickly. The plastic isn't the problem... Its the perfect hardness for these and i have to try pretty hard to get it to burn. I think a blow dryer will do the trick in heating the mold for the first pour of the day.

Thanks for the advice... Heres a couple more that look a lot better now. Microwaving the mold before pouring worked great. Keeps the edges of the pours clean for doing multi colored baits. Time to make some crazy color combos with the 4 feet of snow ive got in my driveway right now.

what did you use for a prototype if it is bigger than a pounder?

I hand sanded a block of balsa wood, added the fins, tail and eyes with poplar and basswood and brought it all together with layers of car bondo filler and a lot more sanding. Took a LOT longer than i had planned but in the end i got it just where i want it. I didnt want a standard one pound bait, i wanted my own bait. At first sight with a crappy picture it looks the same but its not... The eyes are a lot bigger and bugged out, the head is slightly wider and taller, the pec fins are a lot bigger, the tail is a little bigger and the whole bait is a little longer. My internal harness is all my own too, im forming the wire by hand and made molds for pouring the lead head and body weights and i added a lot of rigidity in my design... They will not fold up like a taco with the harness i made for them. Heres a shot of my original still glued to a mirror tile, and a comparison shot with mine on the left and a standard one pound bait on the right.

Those look awesome! Appears that you are dialing in the procedure too. I really like the bigger eyes and head. Those suckers should really move some water.

Call them BullHeads. Just cut me in on some of the profits when you make it big selling them.

Nice work!

Yeah, its crazy how much you can change the action on these kinds of baits by just moving the weight around a little here and there. Ive now got one harness that runs great shallow and another one that has it run a little straighter and deeper. Both have completely different hanging/gliding/falling properties. They all move a lot of water with the huge eyes i put on them, but arent really any harder to fish than what i was used to. Still having fun making the different color combos.
