I was thinking of getting some stick on weight ie. sticky wheel weights. I figured they would be perfect to add weight to the bottom of the bait to make it run a little deeper. I can't seem to get the hell hounds down very deep. I am looking at getting either 10" hellhound or 10" phantom I want them down 5-6 feet though.

Count them down before you begin your retrieve and slow down. Adding weight may affect the action of the bait. Phantom makes a deeper version give that one a try.

I use the 10" hellhound and the 10" phantom softail. I think the hellhound is quite a bit heavier if I recall, literally like casting a brick @ 10 oz. or so. How I work them normally they run about 3-4' down, if I work them slower as the water cools they will run deeper, maybe 5-6'. I'm thinking you can probably count them down for some deeper action too. Weighting gliders can be tricky but if you can get the stick on weights you may be able to find a sweet spot.

It could be me but but every time I count them down it ends up near the surface half way through the cast. I really like the big walleye color in both baits. If you guys had the choice would you go phantom or hellhound if you could only have one?

I'm a huge fan of hellhounds. Great action, great silhouette and good choices for size and color. I think that phantoms might have the edge in cold water due to their more subtle action.

How does squirkos compare? I see the monster runs fairly deep.

I love the squirkos! They have a more erratic nature and can be fished at a deeper range quite easily. The XL loads up nice on the cast and works effortlessly with taps of the rod to get a great slow wide motion. The regular size doesn't swing as wide but is great worked slow or fast.

I own squirkos, hellhounds and phantoms and I think I would be crazy to ONLY use one of those baits. Distinctly different actions in my opinion and different uses.

I have weighted a 10" Hellhound with the Jo Musky weight set. I put the weight in the exact middle and it ran great.

I'm not a fan of the squirko xl, from my experience it doesn't come close to the hellhound or phantom, I have tried different retrieves and I could only get back and forth with it - not much gliding. With little to no effort the phantoms/hellhounds can do what a squirko does and much more, but that's my opinion. I have never used a manta. Like someone said above, the hellhounds and phantoms come in great color/sizes/profiles, I have both in multiple sizes.

Hot Tail Gliders are awesome for getting down deep especially the Mag size.

From my experience a 10" phantom can easily achieve 5 to 6' on a medium retrieve. They get down even deeper if counted down. No experience on the 10" hellhound though. The regular or mag sized Hot tail gliders get down deep also.

The squirko is not suppose to glide. It is an erratic side to side and the occasional up and down. It is not fair to compare it to a hellhound or phantom because it is two different styles. Retrieve the squirko with light taps and it was dart erratically. Both lures have a time and a place!

I love the XL Squirko. I own a phantom and a hellhound and I can't work either of them properly, I probably overwork them, but I can make the XL dance.

I guess I had the wrong idea/expectation of the Squirko from the get-go then. I was expecting it to be more of a glider similar to the hellhound/phantom. I was able to get it to work as stated above but that wasn't the action I was looking for. I can definitely see it slaying some fish!

I use a Hot Tail Glider if I want to stay deep. They have a deadly wobble on the death pause.

Try Ben Modica's Motivator it's a great deeper running glide bait. Not to mention his paint work is second to none.

Try a Rove with an egg weight at the front of your leader. Gets it deep without losing any action.

I have done well on Ben's baits as well. So much so my friends all have them now. One of them recently popped a.49.5"er in Indiana on a modivator.

I saw the pic. That was a beauty! I've busted lots and raised many with that pattern. Ben's baits work magic in those waters because they run where no glide bait has been

The best deep running glider is a Sebile Stick Shadd in the fast sinking version.
