Never tied anything but crappie jigs on my Peak Rotary. I'm going to start fly fishing for mooskies next year and I'm going to start tying flies over winter and I'm on a tight budget. I want this to be stand alone for large flies and at around $140-150 is priced right. Claims 8/0-22 hooks. Any thoughts

I have owned and used a Dyna-king kingfisher for years. The jaws are rock solid and will hold 5/0's without a problem . That is the largest hooks I have tied on. I have never used it for small hooks as I have a renzetti traveler that I use for hooks size 2 and smaller.

I use my peak rotary vise for muskie flies with no problem. Have used up to 6/0 hooks in it.

Is that with standard jaws?

The Kingfisher seems to carry quite a reputation for the strong jaws it shares with the barracuda model. How sturdy is the base?

Yes, with the standard jaws. I've thought of getting the bigger jaws, but the normal ones work fine so I've never gotten them. Never had a hook pop out, even while spinning deer hair.

Hey Archie, I contacted Griffin today. For the money I'm starting to sway towards them!

Decided to go with the Kingfisher after a lot of research. Question now is pedestal base or c-clamp ? Those with one, how stable is the base for tying muskie flies?

Good move going with the Dyna-King you won't regret it . I got the pedestal I like it and I tie some crazy big stuff.

That sounds good then. I can get one LNIB for $120 with pedestal base. My main problem is the desk i do my tying has a slide out keyboard and no place to use a clamp. But I'm going to try to get some cedar and make a classy little tying bench next year though

I've tied on a Dyna-King Baracuda since 99. They're a top notch company and the jaws are outstanding. I think it says up to 6/0 or 7/0 but I've had 10/0 Octopus in there on a regular basis.

I prefer the pedestal base. I read and hear people say the C-clamp is more versatile, but I don't see how that is. The pedestal you can place pretty much anywhere. C-clamp, you've got to have something flat to clamp it to. I'm a heavy-handed tier, tying big flies and the pedestal stays put just fine for me.

Anvil Atlas Rotary vice....Made in USA! comes with 2 bases and for 125 bucks on Flea Bay you can't go wrong. Heavy solid base and I have no issues with mine at all. I think is up to 7/0 hooks.
