I have an 18" sucker (19" with tail pinch :P ). I am not too worried about a muskie hitting an 18" sucker... But I am afraid it might make a good hookset more difficult. It has been several years since I have used suckers, but I had really good luck with smaller ones around 12". What is the biggest sucker you have used successfully?

Big suckers get attention but hooksets become the issue especially when a smaller fish grab it. Nothing lime seening a 30" musky chomping your giant sucker. Use two hooks space them on each side one forward of the other and hopefully one will get in the fish's mouth.

Not at all....only thing to consider is if your quick strike rig can handle a sucker that big. I make my own as I think most of the comemrically made ones have too small of hooks. I would want a 5/0 stuck in the side of a minnow that big and I would want to ensure the hooks were place far enough back on the minnow that they are where you want them not oo far forward...

I don't think you'd be too wild using even a 7-0 treble on a sucker that long, probably two of them. I mostly use just one treble because I'll trade bites for missed fish all the time....but not on an 18" bait. I tie the hooks on every conceivable length of line and then select the one for the sucker that comes out of the pail. I put the rubber band through the snout, attach it to my leader, and then select the exact hook set-up so the hook is exactly where I want it on the sucker (usually 2/3 back) then add a second if required...or I lose my confidence. Any hook size can be the one you want....might as well have them!

The Junk man nailed it...I do much of the same. I have a 3750 with rigs going up in 1 inch increments. I dont use rubberbands, I bend .035 gauge wire but it all works about the same. I use a Propane plumbing torch to heat up hooks to bend them for rigs...works like buttah'

the bigger the better, but the previous comments are correct. hooksets become an issue with the big suckers. we're hitting about 75% of sucker bites this year by quickly figuring out which way the fish is facing and ripping in the opposite direction like our lives depend on it. sometimes they just don't have a hook in their mouth, unfortunately.

Wow, 22". That makes 18" not seem so huge.

Not unheard of to use suckers over 22" if you can legally find them. I prefer shumway clip-n-gos normally but extra large suckers (over 20") may require custom rigs. Have experimented with larger hooks but smaller (2/0) works better for me probably due to the finer points piercing much better. Just make sure your drag isn't cranked down if using lighter hooks because they will bend quickly when a large fish runs hard.

Use rubberbands as $15 can go swimming away real fast if the hooks aren't properly pierced through the sides. If you pierce just below the skin and bring the barb back through should not have an issue with hooks coming out and the smaller the hook your more likely to prevent the hooks from puncturing vitals of the sucker so they live longer and are more squirmy in the water.

Can you post a picture of your sucker? I am sure I speak for everyone when I say this, we question the size. Lets see a pic so we can blast the hell out of your 18" claim!

How about this one? With a tail squeeze, it should easily push over 20...

I have a rig for that.

I tie my own rigs and for pig minnows of that size I use 3551 7/0. Per the above, having multiple sizes is worth the time investment.

No way !! Digital calipers and analog photo analysis prove 16.75 tops with less than 1% probability of error.
