| I often wondered if there was a fishable population in Crane Lake and it seems there might be based on the fact that these guys caught 3 including a beast that looks all of the 58 1/2 they claim.

I doubt the fish had a 28" girth but it looks long as all get up and I assume they used the Rapala measure behind them.

This guy did nearly everything the musky community wants. Measures and photo'd on a board, good equipment, and released. The only quibble that could be made would be laying it on the carpet. But beyond that, bravo to the guy.
Looks pretty legit to me, but I couldn't possibly care less. It's a great fish. |

Location: Waukee, IA | I think that using two terrible pictures as evidence that the girth measurement is wrong is pretty short sighted. Sure it doesn't look that big around, but most people who have seen fish with a 28" girth saw it on a fish 6-10 inches shorter than this example. |

Location: Hayward, Wisconsin | While not wishing to debate thegirth of this giant, let me just ask if anyone of you naysayers have seen a fish of this caliber? Girth is the largest body dimension, regardless of where it is. In this case it is just behind the huge head. While none of us were there, I would say that the method used to obtain that girth measurement is problematical and would be unacceptable for record application. Having said that, had this fish been killed, a "proper" girth measurement could have and would have been made.
The Modern Day World Record was 58 inches long with a 29 inch girth. The head of this fish would be very similar to that. Personally, I have no problem with the claimed girth measurement, but as easily noted in the photo of the fish lying down, the girth gets continuously smaller a short distance behind the head to the tail, indicating that this fish would be a good "poster child" of reasoning why length/girth formula's just can't and don't work for anything other than an "estimate" of weight and is cases such as this would greatly overestimate fish weight.
As I have stated many, many times in the past, "If you don't weigh it, you shouldn't say it".
Let's all just be happy that this giant was released to give another lucky angler a shot at a fish of a lifetime...Congrats to the angler and Thanks as well!! |

| The angler obviously knew just how special of a fish this is, as he pointed it out to his father and had him look at the fish in the water in case it got off. So kudos to him for releasing it.
However, when you make statements like this: “I knew what the state record was. I knew this fish was bigger. But I don’t want to be the guy who’s got his name down for a state record and for killing that fish.” You're basically fueling your own fire..
Super (released) fish. Great story behind it. Wouldn't have been the state record.

| An amazing catch, hats off to the lucky anglers.
I recall from having heard Larry speak a few years back at our banquet, that that there has always been a nascent population in Vermillion. I think he showed us a photo from the 1930s or 1940s of a decent musky being held by an angler. Given how interconnected the many lakes are in that part of MN, it makes you wonder what other Monsters are available to those who are willing to fish for the needle in the haystack.
