I'm a newbie musky fisherman. Yesterday I am fishing a small river and in only the eighth cast of the trip a musky strikes my spinnerbait as it nears the kayak. My question is: What do I do next?

Here is what I did. I cast again to the same spot, even though I did not see anything following my lure (the water is murky) I figure-eighted for about 30 seconds and then made a handful more of casts, then I switched to another lure (a Salmo Skinner) and made a few more casts. Being that I had a lot more water to cover, I moved on. A few hours laer I hit the same spot, but nothing happened.

How long should I have stayed and tried to get the musky to strike again? Do extended attempts work? What would you have done?

Here is the video of the moment in question:

I'd say what you did sounds about right. If I have a hit that doesn't hookup I cast back, do a few good figure 8's, and maybe, maybe not, try a different bait.

Not too often have I had one come back after it's hit enough to feel hooks, but I figure it's worth a shot for a cast or two. My experience is I wouldn't spend a lot of time sticking around trying to catch one that just hit.

I have NEVER had a fish that felt a hook that I missed eat when casting back to it. And yes, I've tried.

So, when you miss'em...I go to the old stand by of yelling and breaking things.

Thanks for the replies. I guess missed strikes are something I have to learn to live with.

I had a musky eat in figure eight on lotw this year and had it on for 4 seconds head shaking. It got off, so I figure 8 more and on second figure eight he came back from under boat and ate it and I caught it. Up til this year I would have just said I blew that fish, but not anymore. I think you did everything u should have.

I had a partner a few years back that missed a couple of fish in succession he turned the air blue snapped his rod and threw it and a 200 dollar reel overboard. I managed to snag the outfit and charged him $10 for the reel and laughed at him.

Hooked a 30" at Eagle this summer. Fish jumped and threw the bait about 10 feet, swam over and grabbed it again. Wish the 50"ers would be so eager.

I've caught fish that have felt hooks before. But those are the "exception" and not the "rule" fish.

Usually when I miss one, and the ones I miss are usually big, I resort to name calling in trying to lure the fish back. When that doesn't work, I turn a beautiful shade of magenta in the hopes that bright color attracts said fish back to the boat. When that doesn't work, I turn to a cold frosty beverage to help things out.

Probably depends on the mood of the fish - I had a really hot fish few years ago that threw a crankbait after about 10 sec - I went back about 30 min later and it ate the same bait and this time hit the net. Probably also boated a tiger that hit, got off and hooked up again about 10 min later but I never saw the fish on the fish hookup, so can't be sure. When I lose a fish I always try again later but my re-hookup percentage is very low.

I would go back the next morning if it was me. When you see a fish you may not boat it then, but you will eventually.

Was fishing in eagle lake few years back, a guide that came with the resort for a week said watch this my friend at the front of an 18ft boat had a follow on a bucktail the guide in the back of the boat stuck his bucktail in the the water and went in circles with his bucktail about as fast as you could go and the fish hit it.

I missed one at this past weekends IMTT on lake Mcmaster. We stayed in the spot for a few more minutes and then continued our drift. Went back to the top of the drift and ran in again with no luck. Came back about three hours later and it ate again, this time I did not mess it up and ended up getting big fish of the tourney. She ate the same bait presented at the same angle, it just took her about 3 hours to reload.

For me, the only ones that have ever come back were the ones who either missed the lure completely, followed the lure and didn't even try to eat it, or just nipped at the back of the bait. Everyone I've ever hooked and lost was gone.

To the original question? I'd throw a few different lures and try coming at the fish from different angles. If that doesn't work? Give it a few hours and come back later.

If it was actually hooked, I wouldn't spend a lot of time. There's always the possibility that it will come back or that there's another fish in the immediate vicinity, but I'm of the belief that once you hook them it scares them away.
