I have a box of older 55 & 6501's and 2 7000 Abu's that here and there over the years got shelfed due to failure or to upgrade. I would like to send them out to all get refurbished. We no longer have anyone local to send them to.

Recommendations of a reputable place to send them?

"Local" which is where? I always send mine back to Abu in Spirit Lake and they get them done fast and right and sometimes free (depending on model).

Send them back to ABU. Cheaper, faster and they always have the right parts ON HAND so you don't wait for backordered parts.

Does not sound as if OP is in a hurry as he states reels have been in a box for quite some time. Personally I would rather deal with some one I can talk to directly, some one who chases the same fish I do, someone who contributes to the knowledge on this board. And last but not least, Support Small Business! JMHO.

Local guys are great, but the one near me is backlogged 4 weeks for tune ups and repairs, which for me is too long during the fall when I need my reels most. That's the main reason I just learned to do it myself, just buy parts from the local shop and have it done in 5 minutes. I guess I didn't know how quickly he wanted them back.

I would suggest repairing them yourself, especially if they're not in regular rotation.

It's really not all that complicated if you have the reel schematics. Best way I've found is to line the parts up in the order in which they came off the reel, facing the direction they were facing. Makes assembly a breeze. Helps to take a few pictures along the way while taking it apart, too.

If they're all Abu's, that's even better - you always have one that's put together right that you can refer to.

That said, I will probably send all my reels to Pikemaster at one point for upgrades and a good going through.

Guys I can work on the older ABU reels but I don't stock parts for them. Chuck at Sportmans has alot of the oder parts in stock, so if your ABU is over 10 years old send them to him.

I doubt if he carries much for the "have a box of older 55 & 6501's" lefty's like the clutch arms and worm gears, etc........
