Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Looking to get another set of cold weather base layer for the really nasty days on the water. I've always gone with the Under Armour, but it's more than a bit pricey. Other suggestions?
*and please no "suck it up, I wear jeans and I'm fine". because...well, yeah.

| I am pretty sure Cabelas base layer is the same as under armor for half the price. I have the heavy weight stuff and the fabric looks the exact same as the Under Armor 4.0 for almost half the price. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i work in Honduras where the stuff is assembled from base fabrics an met a guy who runs a plant making "performance gear" and yes, they make for all the brands in the same plant, not unlike food and other things that are commodities that convert to brands with logos/print in the same factory. brands don't "make" very many things anymore, it's all sourced. fabrics are commodities and assemblers bid for brand and private label business. |

True, if the identical fabric and trims were spec'd by both brands. And there are price points as well, so one brand for their high end version specs a 200 gm Merino Wool with higher thread count, denser weave, extra brushing, adds anti-pilling treatment, uses better thread, and the garment retails for $100. Gander Mt might be in the same factory and for theirs they spec a 140 gm Merino Wool with a little less thread count, lower denier filament, doesn't add the anti-pill, uses cheaper thread, and that garment sells for $60. They are definitely not the same, but your point is taken - they could be depending on the spec. Same with boots and rods and ...
There is a factory in China that makes 1/2 a dozen different brands, but depending on the spec and the materials and the weights set by the brand, they are all different boots commanding different price points. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i was talking on the performance wear piece. getting to the other and natural fibers you and steve are absolutely correct. if anyone wants to order any alpaca products let me know, i have an inside track. a former colleague/friend is an alpaca farmer and i bought a bunch of it for holiday gifts over the past couple of years. it's the ultimate hollow-fiber product for socks, sweaters etc... |

one thing I started wearing years ago that definitely adds to the overall comfort level is a neck warmer..get a good one..Ice Armor has a nice one... not letting the wind get down your neck will make you last longer out there.. keep the head and neck warm you will be set

Neck Gator is fad. but I've been wearing one on my fall excursions for many many years. 35F or warmer, I'm usually sporting my trendy Under Armour base layer. But when the ice is forming, I reach for my Merino Wool base. Affordable and effective. I may have to try some Alpaca Sox! |

Nice. First laugh I've had in a while!
I got my base layer at the Army Surplus store. Not sure what the actual brand is or if there even was one. It does the trick.
As for socks and boots, I've experimented with various weights of wool socks and various insulated boots up to 1000g thinsulate. My feet have never gotten cold to the point where I want to quit fishing, but it's a rare day where they are comfortable. I'd say it's split 50/50 between too hot and too cold.
May have to try the alpaca socks.
Steve are they itchy? That's the thing I cant stand about wool...

Location: Iowa | First Lite Merino Wool Chama EXP top with the Allegheny EXP bottom....stuff is very warm, dries extremely quick, can worn for days on end without smelling and has almost no bulk...all I wear anymore is Merino Wool base layers. it's pricey, but worth every penny IMO! |

Location: Wisconsin | I think it's hard to go wrong with any of the name brands. I use Cabelas brand and/or Sitka Gear. If you do a bit of looking, it's possible find good deals at or over 50% off. Musky fishing isn't a very physically taxing sport. Not like chasing sheep or elk in the mountains. Stay away from cotton, and you're pretty much good to go. Tom |

I've bought from them before and they are great products and presented well. i think the products are made through a co-op they have their so as original and authentic as they come. |
