First thanks to dad for going on yet another muskie safari with me, Thanks to you guys for giving me the confidence to bomb a pounder all day, And thanks to James at tackle industries for getting my rod back to me and back on the water.

I got a new personal best on the pond.

In the hurry I didn't pinch the tail on the bump board, was so worried about a quick release.

Was she a 50?

Possible. I just bumped a fish at just over 46 then decided to remeasure it and pinch the tails and it was really over 47.

I had a 49.75" a couple years ago on LOTW and that was with a tail pinch. Honestly don't know what it was without.

All I can tell you is how many other guys do you know that have caught a 49.75"? That's got to be the most rare fish in musky fishing.

I have a feeling deep down a lot of guys would round up, but I couldn't do it. It would be like saying you shot par in golf, knowing that you took a mulligan off the first tee!

Pinch...not quite going to make 50" with that tail. IMO. If you measure her vertical with a stick though she is 50"! OH...and to be 100% clear... I don't condone measuring fish vertical...nor do I partake in that practice...just know a few individuals who have...to make a 49.5" a 50".
50" is just a number...Great fish that I hope you are very proud of!!! Congrats!!!!

Almost certainly so...particularly given the size of this fish. That tail is nowhere near extended to the length it can be legitimately measured.

I just got my personal best 54"er a month ago. She was a real handful to hold and I asked my son to give me a length as I held her nose on the zero mark.

He said "Wow, 54 inches dad!" and we put her back. We were both hugely pumped as you might imagine. Biggest fish of my life, 30+ yrs. musky fishing!!

Back on the dock an hour later he says to me.."Ya know, I never thought to pinch her tail!!!!!!"

You live with it!

Nice fish.

Jeremy.

Had one a buddy got in Indiana a few years back, 49.5" tail pinched to 49 9/10". Yep 1/10" shy. I never let him forget it, even took a pic and cropped to just show.the tail and text it to him every once in awhile!lol. If you think its 50 with the pinch, it matters not to us what you call it.

yup, you measured it the way you measured it... imo it mighta gone 50 but maybe not.. either way nothing wrong w a 49.5... I have lots of 49.75s as do a lot of my buds who don't need to make our fish bigger just to say we got a 50"er ...

my bump board measures to the tenth of an inch. Wish I had giant calipers but it will do.

Congrates on a great fish!!  I didn't realize that muskies swam around with their tail pinched.   It is a great catch and you should be darn proud of it.

I caught a 49.5 in the dark a few years ago and was like you after the fact thinking that I should have measured it again or pinched the tail just in case it was my first 50. I didn't fret too much because I figured I wanted my first 50 to be a no doubter. The following year I stuck a 52! Awesome fish and you will stick a 50+ "No doubter" next year!

Thanks for the input guys,

Really proud of the fish and it was really special to catch it with my father.

Mille lacs fish are so darn thick!

Guess we will just have to up the ante and get a bigger one in OCT

Thanks again!

It's your own dang fault for using that fancy bump board! My three-dollar, 6' tape measure from Wal-Mart would have easily had it easily measured at 50! Ha ha.

Lots of people have 50s and that's somewhat a "right of passage" in this game. Some have put in the effort, others got lucky or owe 50% of the credit to a guide. When you say "personal best", that tells me you earned it, so it's well-worth bragging, whether it was exactly 50" or not!

So congrats! Nice fish!!

Measurement may be taken with the fish?s tail ?pinched

That's cut from the PMTT rules section, to be honest I never really thought about it until I read that.
I just figure that if that's what the pros do then it must be how it is done?

I'm still in the dark on girth measure, do you go by fattest spot you can find on the fish?
Like if she is 23 at the shoulder, but 26 at the gut(and you can feel a meal there). What do you use
For your weight calculator or if you plan on getting a replica made?

Biologist always measure with the tail pinched, regardless of species. Girth is at the widest spot. Good photo and those measurement will give the taxidermist the numbers he needs to make an accurate replica.

Weight calculators are merely and "estimate" and are rarely accurate and usually overstate actual weight.

Regardless, the gentleman caught a beauty!! And I'd bet she make 50 "pinched".

Not in the habit of pinching tails, always thought it was kind of trivial. Henceforth my largest fish was a "49 and dammit"

I had the same thing happen last year. We were out without a bump board and laid the fish on a tape on the boat carpet. I was so concerned about getting the fish off the carpet so it didn't lose anymore slime that it didn't even register that it was 49.5 with no tail pinch until she was back in the water. I was stoked about the fish but it bugged me a little bit. There was always an asterisks in the story. Needless to say I got us a bump board. Fortunately, later in the summer I got my 50 and it helped clear the thoughts of my "maybe 50".

Earlier this week I caught a 50. When I first laid it on the board it looked about like yours and with a pinch it barely crossed the 50 line. I actually thought about this thread and would have taken a bump pic but I was fishing solo. I would guess yours would have made it. Try not to beat yourself up about the magic number, that is an awesome fish 49.5 or 50. Anyone doing a water measurement would have called it 50. Go get yourself a monster in October and you will forget all about it. Congrats on the beauty!

I got that beat. My bump board has hash marks at 1/8" intervals. My buddy got a 49 15/16 last week, it was literally pinched to halfway from the 49 7/8 and 50" hash mark. He hasn't caught one over 50", and I was freaking out, making sure we got all we could out of that fish. I can't type what I said as I tried to get it to 50. It's a trophy no doubt, but I guess we're the most honest Musky fisherman on Earth. We call it 49 15/16". Oh well. Everyone at the lodge was like "Dudes, it's a 50."
