Looks sweet but just adding more in my opinion to go wrong. That's a lot of movement deploy and trim.
Seriously how hard is it to deploy your own trolling motor. Adding spot lock to the pedal is a great idea though.

electronic stow and deploy seems like more to go wrong. I worry about my Terrova failing on me now add in more moving parts and that really sounds like trouble. I wonder how much extra juice it will take.

I personally can't wait for it. Fishing in a tiller I have to walk arouund clients up to the front of the boat to deploy and retract my terrova. I would assume the parts are replaceable unlike the genesis. Hopefully it holds up better than the genesis did. That was a great motor until they broke.

Looks sweet. How does the foot pedal work exactly? I see that the corner direction buttons for steering are also for trim up and down. Does the user need to hit a function button before trimming up and down?

I would love a feature that raised my trolling motor when I get into extremely shallow/rocky situations. It would come into play almost daily. Some good innovation here, that has been in the works since the release of the Terrova.

The one feature I question is the anchor button on the foot pedal. It seems really close to the speed adjustment roller. Since the roller on the Terrovas move so easily, I usually put the side of my foot on the roller and pivot my foot to adjust it slowly. I'm afraid I might hit the anchor by accident a lot. I need to look at a foot pedal to see if its a problem. I wish Minn Kota would let us custom design our foot pedal of choice but not likely.

Lazy America. Instead of that feature I wish they would add a speed adjustment dial for the head to turn faster or speed it up way to slow for fishing current or river settings

They tried this with the Genesis once before and that was a disaster.
I can see some added convenience for the automatic stow and deploy, but that is a ton of extra things that could go wrong. The spot lock on the pedal is a great feature for those who prefer to use the pedal. I just use the remote so not a big deal for me.
Trolling motors are already outragiously prices, this is going to increase the cost significantly I am sure.
Wouldn't this lower the price of the current models?

How long ago was the Genesis developed? Since then, Johnson Outdoors has completely flipped Humminbird and Canon and developed the Talon. The technology advancements from those companies have been pretty amazing, and all dovetail.
Comparing the two is like comparing my computer from that era to the Alienware I am using right now or the Chevy pick up I was driving at the time with my Toyota Tundra.
Trolling motors are not priced 'outrageously', the pricing there has been about even with advancements and new features. You get what you pay for. I can still buy a nice bowmount for $379 for my X170T. Or, I can buy one with universal sonar, spot lock, a remote, networking capacity with com links to my 'Birds, and a ton of other features. I can still buy an Intel Celeron 'puter with two gigs of ram for $250, too. It'll edit a video...sort of. Well, actually it won't, unless I use the camera from a decade ago and am willing to wait for an hour for it to render.
The Ulterra took an ICAST award. So did the Onix. And Johnson Outdoors took best in show with a cool little boat they make. Not a bad show for them at all.

I would hope this would lead to the current models lowering in price, but what if they discontinue many of the current models in place of the current high end ones coming with these new features and a higher price point? Just look at how many different Terrovas are out there. Will all of these variations remain or are they going to eliminate some to be replaced by this new Ulterra? I would suspect so. In that case I dont see the pricing drop on existing much. The V2 motors didnt plummet in price when the Terrova came out.
I am not in the market for a trolling motor right now since I just bought one, but this doesnt interest me, not saying it isnt cool, but I just really do not see the benefit. A talon I can understand, serves a specific purpose. A bowmount trolling motor that deploys itself and can raise and lower I just dont see that being all that beneficial to me.
If I am going to fish skinny water, I raise the motor ahead of time and vice versa. I dont have a need to adjust on the fly like that, but that is me.
I also am completely capable of stowing and deploying it myself. To completely compare this to the talon is a bit of a stretch IMO. There are far more moving parts here than a talon. It just moves up and down. Neat idea, but I will pass.

This motor will be a big benefit to skinny water anglers, especially when it's rougher than a foot chop or so. Ability to adjust the depth at a touch will assist in boat control and save time and effort. The Bass guys will love this thing.
The self deploy unit is compact, quiet, and solid, and that's a big benefit for those who use the motor from the center and rear of the rig (guides, trollers, folks who use the kicker and electric at the same time, etc). Big picture for the entire market and it's easy to see who will want to spend the money and who will not.

Cool feature, more electronics the more that can go wrong with the motor, also more battery draw. Now if they could only design an electric steer unit on a scissor lift that would be the motor for me. As far as price 1500-2000 for sure, used to be able to buy 74lb 24v pd for under 500. 1500 was big ticket in pinpiont came out, but still it could actually follow the depth contours of the lake, yes some didn't work, but one that did were money. would be nice to see depth track back.

I would disagree. New power steer motors are almost as fast as cable driven ones anyways. Honestly, with all the new gps linking capabilities the new power driven motors have I don't think it will be long before they all switch over. It's revolutionizing boat control. And I, for one, wish I hadn't bought a new cable driven motor before last season already.

key word "almost" … nothing will ever replace a rope and a cable for some fishing situations.
bryan, just put a quick plate on your boat and use both. i use a cable or an auto depending on situation. i find myself with the auto mostly but love the ability to 1. have a spare and 2. be able to have a cable if i need one.
i'm considering this one and the new motorguide … both with some interesting features vs. what was previously. will still want base plate compatibility for the ability to travel with a spare though, cuz you just never know when you might need one.

that's a really good point about the quick-change baseplate.
i've already decided to upgrade to an Ulterra this fall when they get released. i might sell my current Terrova but i also might keep it as a back-up to bring on big trips as a "just in case" insurance policy. being able to switch/replace easily and without drilling is a huge bonus. (i assume the Ulterra will fit on the Terrova base!)

Tough to justify dropping another 2 grand or more on a motor and a new humminbird to link it to when I just spent $1500 on a new cable driven motor and head unit last spring. I'm a couple years off from an upgrade at this point... But when I do it will more than likely be on one of these mahs. They look sweet to me, gonna give them a couple years to get the kinks out and drop the price hopefully.
