After getting good response from an earlier post regarding what goes into a repaint I thought I might share a few more dramatic repair jobs. Not all baits are fixable but most are.

This one is a Bobby Bait that was badly peeling. This happens due to swelling of the wood when wet and paint seperating when dry. This is a relatively easy fix. Remove all paint and re seal. Once repainted, two coats of etex an good to go.

This boss hawg was similar. I was asked to keep it black. So a black base and a small amount of DuPont Chromalusion as a accent. It looks blue in this light but flips to red and gold in different lights. Hard to do much creatively while keeping it black but this has a nice subtle custom look.

This smity slap tail had a factory flawed paint job. This bait was originally based in pearl white and then other color over that. When you seperation from one color like this what is happening is too much time between coats. The base was cured which doesn't allow the next color to adhere. This can also happen if you wait too long before clear. The clear will flake off leaving base.

All paint was stripped and the bait was repainted in a bright sucker pattern. Metallic brown and gold over a black silver and white base. Gold flake over all, new eyes and two coats of etex.

The last is the worst of all. This hawg wobbler had very bad hook rash. In spots almost a 1/4"! But this is a case for a lure that in the owners words " had done a lot for him, so it was time for some help in return."

The bait was sanded and coated with etex lite to fill and seal. Then sanded and painted to its original glory. You would be very hard presses to be able to tell that it's not new.

Beautiful work!! You did great on all of them, but to see a bait worn out like the hog wobbler is just awesome, hook rash like that doesnt happen over night. There must of been a lot of hours on that thing.

This hard head came to me in rough shape for a plastic bait with very little hook rash or " normal" signs of wear. It had all of the paint / clear coming off in one piece down to bare plastic. Obviously there was an adhesion problem and I'm am assuming there was some mold release on the plastic or just a type of paint that doesn't grab the plastic. Hard to say.

I removed all the existing paint with my fingernail. I then sanded and used an adhesion promoter and white epoxy sealer. Then a coat of envirotex to smooth everything out. Then base and color coats in power plant perch and a pair of coats of envirotex clear.
It will ship in the next few days and hopefully the new owner will send a pic with the new tail he bought for it.

There is no mold release on them when they are made and they are sanded. There was about a dozen that I tried a different primmer on that I stopped using. By looking at the picture the paint bonded to the epoxy like it should as I use waterbased as oil based does not bond as good to epoxy. It appears to have bonded under the holofoil tape. If the owner would have contacted me I would have replaced it.

You did replace it Roger, I must say I was pleasently surprised. I sure couldn't see throwing it away so I decided to try a repaint. Can't wait to get it out on the water!

Here's a pic of the hard head with its new phantom tail. It is now a one of a kind hardhead with a new lease on life.

As I stated in the begin of this thread not all baits are fixable. But if someone really wants to restore or rebuild a bait that they determine is worth it , in most cases it's possible.

How much do you charge for the repaints?
I have a couple of suicks that have deep hook rash and then the hooks get stuck in the soft wood.

A typical rehab is 15 dollars plus shipping but since your so close we could probably get around that. Could be less depending on condition.

This has been a really cool project. These are 14" wooden Grandmas. Made by hand by Jake Satonica in the early years of Grandma lures. They appear to be some sort of pine with a copper through wire.

Some might think of it as sacrilege to paint such a rare bait but the owner has a few more an likes to use these baits. He sent them to me with a fair amount of flaking paint but as you can see the wood beneath was in great shape.

The baits were stripped and resealed. Then painted the patterns requested by the client. Called by the website blue frog and zit frog. Then as requested I used three coats of auto clear instead of epoxy for fear of throwing off the action.

The original eyes were epoxied back on and off to MN for some fall trolling.

The last pic is to show a comparison of a twisted granny which is based on a classic 7.5" grandma.

That blue frog is killer Andy! How well does auto clear hold up?

Auto clear is basically the same as many factory finishes. A lot of newer baits use water based clear but the durability is about the same. If you T your hooks it holds up ok. But it's not like epoxy. The client understood that and was more concerned with retaining the action. He had had one done with heavy epoxy and said the action was not the same.
