I'm looking to put a floor in my little jon boat. Was thinking treated 3/8" ply, but I might just go with regular plywood and some type of coating instead of carpet. I've seen some things advertised, and was just wondering if anyone had experience with any of the marine floor coatings. I see one company has a clear option, which would be cool, so the kids could put some artwork on the board before coating...

Also going to paint it, and want to do it quick and dirty. Its already painted, so not bare metal. Brand of paint suggested?(Cabelas has parker camo paint for boats at like 8.00 per can).

Be carefull of the treated plywood some are not alunimum friendly marine or exterior with a couple coats of paint then carpet or vinal. Some use truck bed liner coating. Your going to increase your weight if that matters to you.

i've remodeled a few aluminum boats in my day and the best floor that i could put in was pink foam board in between the ribs (same thickness) and then a layer of aluminum riveted onto the ribs. light and durable. As for coatings, painted floors will eventually lose their paint, truck bed lining works very well but did show some wear and tear but that was alot of abuse duck hunting. I rolled it on myself, then sanded some of it when it dried because it was awfully rough on bare feet. It can be painted also. Carpet is really nice but did not suit my application with these boats being mainly duck boats. My main point is that i stayed away from wood because of the weight.

Painting any other part of the boat, other than the floor, and those paints from cabelas or menards sells some rustoleum spray cans in camo colors that are reasonably priced also, and i haven't had issues with either brand and touch ups are easy (would be a good idea to do a little sanding). One additional thing that i did do was to put that bed liner stuff on the gunwales, they take a beating and still looked decent after a couple of seasons.

I recently rebuilt one of these. Ancient Landau that I put a Lund sticker on (don't laugh).
It still hasn't gotten wet due to the high water we've had on the rivers throughout the north but maybe next week.

I'd recommend going half inch thickness marine grade plywood for the durability. Then after making the cuts for fitting treat with polyurethane. If it adds weight it can always be removed in favor of going barren with a bed liner or whatever alternative option you have. Just make sure to leave the benches and foam insulation in and no worries.

The biggest weight concern will more than likely be from the outboard or sophistication of the front casting deck + supports if you went that far.

For paint, I recommend Duralux. Check out their site as they list the various color options and paint types. A gallon of it goes for about $50.

Truck bed liner. We've used both roll-on and spray
