So guys who fish muskies and smallmouth, how do you split up you time?
-Seasonal? Smallies early in the year then muskies to wrap up the season.
-Daily? smallies during the day and muskies at prime time.
-Little of each on each trip?

Depends where I am, and the conditions, and my mood.

Example...up north last weekend in a tough bite and blowing East winds. Took a break, as I wasn’t feeling it, and smashed a Few darn pretty big bass (one in particular) which was a much better ROI than casting fruitlessly for undersized Muskies in tough conditions. As I have incorporated more family time, Bass have become more appealing. Finding myself getting much better at it too isn’t hurting

I have limited experience solely targeting smallmouth, but have a week alone before a family trip, and hope to figure them out a bit before the family arrives. My 18 year-old daughter still only likes catching, so muskies will be limited.

Early in the season for me. After mid June I rarely fish anything but muskies.

Here is essentially my fishing calendar:

Jan - Mid-April: Fly Fishing for Trout
Mid-April - May: Smallmouth
June Through September: Musky
October: Smallmouth or Musky (Chasing hot bites this month)
November - December: Fly Fishing for Steelhead

That's pretty much how it works with the occational winter fishing trip for musky on open water thrown in.

Where I'm located I really don't have either located near me ): (in large numbers/easy to get to). So when I get to go up north I end up getting to excited and driving myself crazy, causing me to not be as productive as I could be. But if I had good access to both smallies and muskie around me, I would probably fish the smallies early in the year, everything from ice out until just after spawn and then pick up the muskie after that. By bass fishing early in the year I also get to encounter both some large northern and some great eaters. I seem to find the early season pike better on bass gear.

Like esox, walleye and bass. Given the choice I'll always fish for esox, prefer pure breeds if possible. Get a few (19 to 24)' bass lm and sm every year, but don't target them.

Muskies would be my first choice. Still get a charge out of seeing them eat. 12 hours throwing double 10's and bulldawgs on a 95 degree day when the fish just aren't moving? Bah. Give me a nice rock bar, a few dozen leeches, and a box of weedless jigs. Largemouth are rarely pursued on trips up North. Still fun, don't get me wrong. But I can do that 10 minutes from home. Last time we went to Eagle we spent an entire day catching pike. Had a blast, filled the livewell, limited out, went back to camp and took a nap. One of our best fishing days was on a small creek fed lake in Vilas. We were farting around in the creek and noticed a ton of small bait fish schooling around. Dropped a seine on the bottom, herded them over top of it, done. Bait for the day. Back on the lake with a couple slip bobbers, must have caught 40 fish that day. Pike, perch, walleyes, tons of bass. Store bought bait is garbage.

I mostly fish smallmouth early in the year, but whenever water is fairly high I'll walk below the dam for smallies for a few hours. Looks like I'll be doing some of that for the next week or two...maybe even three at this rate!

I do switch to bass fishing if water temps are on the hot side. Usually largemouth in that case.

On those clear bluebird post frontal days on LOTW we like to go bass fishing. Smallmouth are willing biters and they offer a nice break for us old bass fishermen...and sometimes a muskie shows itself!

It's situational and depends on the lake of course. If we are fishing all day on northern WI and Mn lakes we will often switch things up and fish cribs and rock bars for smallies. Typically it will end up 25% smallies. A nice diversion and change of pace when fishing long days.

Down here (Southern OH) it's musky late Sept-April/May, depends on water temps. Then May-Sept I spend most of my time on flows chasing smallies, with occasional run to KY for Striper and Trout

Definitely agree with BNelson, plus I catch a few big bass each season on muskie lures while fishing muskies. Due to a major health issue, if I'm on muskie waters I fish muskies exclusively as I am only able to fish a few hours a trip.

99.9% muskies vs. .1% bass. Works good for me!

When water temps hit 80, I start fishing for smallies.

Might squeeze a float trip with the fly rod in every once in a while.
