I’ve been running an BPS Ocean Master for a reel to abuse by slack line popping big twitch Baits like mag shallow raiders and 10” jakes. She finally is ready to give up the farm so am looking for a replacement. Looking for a reel that can withstand such abuse. Looking forward toylur replies.

I fished with a well known guy that almost exclusively is a 10 inch Jake twitcher/ripper. His take on the best reel was basically always carry spare parts and know how to fix your reel. That said, he thought the stainless steel gears on the Komodo SS 471 may be more durable than most low profile reeas, and the Tranx 500 is just a beast. Not my opinion, but his. He used an older, no longer available reel.

Yeah I have a 500 tranx (fast model) but I was afraid to use it that way ...didn’t want to ruin such an expensive reel ....plus it is normally on a 9ft rod and I like popping twitchbaits on a 7-2 to 7-6 rod. I have an old abu 6500 maybe I’ll use that till it blows...

If you palm the reel, learn to clamp your thumb on the spool on each jerk, takes all the pressure off the reel parts. After some practice it becomes easy.

Yes palm the reel use your thumb on the spool for Hook sets and Ripping Jerk Baits.
That will save the AR Bearing from talking the full Load.

Get a Komodo 471SS, it can handle any abuse your choose to put it through with its stainless steel gearing and rigid frame.

So...the Komodo 471 is 7.1 ratio....37” per turn....that seems high....the 463 is 6.3...and 33” per turn...the line pickup sounds good, but I do straight retrieve a good portion of the retrieve as well...any reason not to consider the 463?

The 6.3 gears are the best !!!
You have great line pickup and cranking power.

I've had great luck with my old Morrums.  Still going strong... and slack snapping jerks/cranks is about all I use them for anymore.  Slower reel by today's standards... but it helps me keep a longer pause in my cadence which I like.  The anti reverse takes a beating with this technique but my Morrums have held up well.

I almost said yes to this...glad I decided to open some boxes and check schematics. It's the same on the 500 and 400. The 300 shows a different part number.

Interesting. Do you know if the 400 and 500 share the same AR bearing AND pawl setup, or is just the AR bearing the same?

The Tranx 300, 400, and 500 reels use the same AR Bearing, BNT 4447 the difference is in the AR Pawl backup sytem, the 500 Tranx uses a DUAL AR Pawl System, the 300 / 400 Tranx uses a SINGLE AR Pawl Backup System.
Both can rip Baits but the 500 will be more stout especially if ripping 10 Jakes.

On the Tranx 300/400 both reels have the most advanced engineering features I have every seen on a reel. They are truly one of a kind Reel on the Market right now.
The Komodo uses a smaller AR Bearing then the Tranx and has a single AR Pawl backup sytem, the AR Pawls are made of Aluminum as the Tranx are stainless steel, which is lots more beefier.
