Posts: 239 Location: Elroy, Wisconsin | Are there any short line trolling experts out there? This old dog needs to learn a few new tricks. Best speed, water depth, line length. Any help appreciated. Mudpuppy

Posts: 45 | Jerry, when did you start long lining? HaHa. have caught many with less than 5 feet of line out. Tuff shads make great short lining baits. Rich

Posts: 20178 Location: oswego, il | Short line trolling can mean many things. I have caught fish trolling shallow weeds before with 5ft of line out and trolling them next to not behind the boat. Edges, flats, deep water all determine what bait and how much line.

8' of line out at 4-6 mph.there is not a lot of lures that will not pop out with that kind of setup. jointed lures shine more than the straight one for short line. wiley fat body are my best one but dale have stop making them since years.killer are also very good.if you don't want to wait months get them at jacksonlures , they've got them in stock. good luck

in brown water sometimes it can represent more than half of my fish. for some reason i forget to talk about bk les chubbies which is my go to cranks. not the riverrun, brian kroll ! at some days it even work really well at gin clear water. the best line you can use for that technic is 30 pound monel , then you will be able to move your lures deeper than you would do with braid with a min of line out. you will need a soft rod like the catfish rod with ss guides.and your drag have to be set less tighter that you would normally do. you will feel every move of the fish like never before.the point is not just about the depth that you can reach it's also about control when you see weed pocket, rock you can dodge them and pass really close to them and the lure will pass at the exact place the boat go

Posts: 65 Location: Springfield, IL and Vermilion Bay, ON | I like to dedicate a rod right in the prop wash out about 10-15 ft. I have used safety pin spinner(no roll or twist) and shallow cranks and bull dawgs...all with success. And works well going along the edge or even thru weed beds...3.0-3.5 mph.

Only seen dinks over the weeds. They're at the edges or deeper. The only time I've seen them shallow is early on prior to the setup of the weeds.

When sondag was still guiding muskies I know he had good success on DL short line trolling weed edges. DL is clear. Never tried it myself because I prefer casting. No clue if that still works there now that they’ve sprayed the weeds so much and decimated the cabbage in the lake.

Posts: 221 | I wouldn't call DL clear, really. But clear or dark, any lake with leech lake strain will have a trolling bite.

On DL before the algae gets rocking I can see the bottom about 10 ft. I fish a lot of stained water so I guess I consider that clear. Everything's relative, I guess. The boat would be within sight of the baits with how short he ran his lines.

Posts: 815 Location: Waukee, IA | I did well trolling a very clear lake last year on short line. Could see the bait next to the prop wash. Picked up 3 fish that way in a short period of time.

Posts: 409 Location: Almond, WI | How many of you prefer to run the bait to next to the propwash (8-9' rod sticking out at 90 degrees) as opposed to in the propwash (straight back down rod)? And is there a scenario where one may be advantageous over the other, or is it a lake specific/experimentation thing?
